The Calexico Chronicle is reporting that the City of Calexico is planning on doubling the size of downtown Calexico via a Beverly Hills based developer to build a one million square foot shopping complex on the west side of town. Located west of Imperial Ave. against the US-Mexico international border, The Charles Company will be adding up to 50 retail stores of which will include a (suprise!) new car dealership, another movie theater, a "big box" store and a factory outlet.

The building is estimated to begin in approximately 18 to 24 months.

This sounds great, except for the car dealership idea. The movie theater I'm a bit skeptical about since the Calexico 10 appears to be struggling at the moment. Regardless, new shops, new restaurants, new things to do in Calexico is overall a plus.

From a quick lookup on The Charles Company, they appear to have a lot of experience and success in other cities in various states.

If so, this Grand Plaza carry the famous Calexico smell of the dirties river in North America, our very own New River. We all know how the stench lurks in the air at the Vons shopping center.

i picture it the same as the outlets in san ysidro facing the border on the west side

I think the majority of this "Grand Plaza" is going to built on the western side of the New River.

The river is still foul, but as long as the winds keep blowing from the west then it might not be much of a problem.

Any status on the New River piping project?

yup, premium outlets like viejas, lake elsinore, cabazon. etc. stores like nike, guess, gap, levis, perry ellis, kenneth cole, all them stores but no big dept stores like robinson/may-macy's, norstroms. As they would expect, their main customers are the fresas popis de TJ.

I havent followed up on the New River committee, havent heard of them and the efforts to pipe it from the border to highway 98. Its been dragging on for much too long, keeping the city of Calexico from expanding westward.
