The new year is coming, so it's a fresh start for everyone. It's a good time to start thinking about improving your physical health, whether it's starting to take brisk walks everyday or joining a health club and/or gym.

I'm thinking about joining a gym-like facility. I hate the fact of paying a monthly fee when I could possibly do something similar at a lower cost, but I've come to realize that if I go solo on this one, the chances of seeing results are low. If anything, spending your money on improving your health and potentially having more energy everday can't be a bad thing.

I ran a quick lookup on SmartPages.com for local health clubs and there were very little. Only Curves (for Women) and Hard Bodies Gym in Calexico showed up when I looked in both Calexico and El Centro. I know very well there's more than this.

So maybe someone can recommend a place to try out. I know Ame-ricano is big on body building, thus his vote in favor of Arnold Schwarzenegger. For someone with no past fitness experience, would it be wise to try out a personal trainer for the first few months or so? Since the freedom of being able to work out at anytime of the day or night is important, are there any places that have flexible hours? Who has the best deal(s)?

Personal trainers are expensive. You might as well flush your money down the toilet.
I am a personal trainer, but my license is expired. If you need any help, I'm willing to get you started on the right road.
I work out at J&J's. As far as what time of day is best; it depends on your goals, but it doesn’t really matter. We do not have a lot of choice of gyms but J&J's and US Fitness are two of the most complete gyms in the valley.

I'm not looking to bulk up or anything, just get in shape. As lean as possible, so I'm guessing that light weights would be best and a lot of cardiovascular work outs.

There's this place on Main St. in El Centro that I just found out about named Body Fit. They charge like $60 a month and it's pretty much a 1 hour session with a small group of people. They have showers and everything, so I could even just go there before or after work. It doens't seem like you have a bunch of meat heads mad dogging you the whole time.

Does anyone do or have done any yoga or pilates? I tried yoga once for about a week and it is incredible.

I've gone to J&J for a few years, and now I'm working out on my own at my brother's house, and to be honest, it isn't much of a difference, except that I'm not paying all that money. Before I used to work on 2 muslces per day, for about an hour an a half. Now this is my routine : I do 4 sets of 12-15 reps of benchpress, same sets and reps for preacher curls, and same for some shit I do by lifting a bar attached to cable, which works on my shoulders and trapz. I do these exercises on mondays, wednesdays and fridays, leaving me the off days to go jogging. I jog around buckling park, from the park to the hospital and all the way around, which is about 1.6 miles. I do this at no monthly cost, and is something anybody could do who doesn't want to get all buff. Eating a lot of Tuna is very good too, I eat it after I work out.

Pilates is amazing. Really works your core: abs, legs, ass. It makes you more flexible too. I HATE aerobic, you know, cardio type exercises. Yoga and pilates are just as intense. Your stomach muscles will BURN.

Ok, well, I'll give you the low-down. I can train you to lose weight and get lean. I'll only charge you 50 bucks a month.

The routine consists of feeding you cereal in the morning, a salad for lunch, and cereal for dinner. We do this for months, as your body is cleansed, and I laugh my ass all the way to the bank.

You wanna be flexible? Do gymnastics.

You want to have stamina? Go running.

You want to lose weight? Keep your fucking mouth closed.

Dude, I can bulk you up or lean you down. Lightweight is not always the answer for leaning down. I would work out with heavy ass weight days before a contest.
The gym on Main Street is not very good. It consist of a bunch of women doing boot camp classes, aerobics and they have very little weights. At J&J's they do not have many meatheads. I am usually one of the bigger guys in there and that does not say much.
I can modify your diet to gain or loose weight. I can make you strong as fuck if you want also.
Yoga is cool, but it's not for me. I took a meditation class when I lived in Oklahoma and that was awesome.
Besides I have been looking for a workout partner. It helps a lot when you work out.

F the gym. I'm more of a working out at home kinda guy. "I'm getting huge, Jerry."

All I use is a simple bench, and some dumbells. I don't even have a bench press bar. With the dumbells I do 8 different exercises. I also do about 400+ sit-ups. I add more every week. I was up to 750 sit-ups before I stopped. My routine lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It takes 6 weeks to see solid results.

And stop eating fast food.

Aren't you only supposed to do about three 20 to 30 crunch repetitions?

You are doing about 300+ too many reps.
If you focus on your abs so much you need to focus just as much on your lower back. It's all diet, not reps.
