TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp 6758.T , the world's biggest consumer electronics maker, said on Friday it would unveil its all-in-one PSX game device to the public next week.

The PSX, which packs a TV tuner, DVD recorder, hard-disk drive, and the PlayStation 2 game player into a single white box, will be unveiled at the CEATEC Japan 2003 industry show in Makuhari, near Tokyo, on Tuesday, Sony said in a statement.

I don't own a gaming console, but with the upcoming release of all-in-one devices from Sony and possibly other consumer electronic manufacturers this could change.

In the past, when you wanted to add a certain function to your home entertainment system you needed to buy a new device which performed that one function. When you had all the functions you wanted at home, you ended up with a (small) rack of hardware which aesthetically didn't look very well in your living room unless you purchased them all from the same manufacturer and the same product line. The new trend in consumer electronics appears to be consolidation or convergence. This has been around in information technology for quite a while now.

The problem I see with this is that you may end up purchasing lower-end hardware and performance as a trade off for space and price. This is good for consumers who may not want or need high-end electronics and just want all the functionality, while I see people who have this need continueing to make those individual purchases. It would appear that their is a larger (and more profitable) market for the former.

I personally would want a device to provide as much as possible. In the case of this all-in-one gaming console, it sounds like a great idea.

What are your thoughts?

Extended warranty. Usually I would advice people not to purchase the extended warranty, but with so many devices all in one you have no other option. Most TV/vcr combos have sucked. It seems they make them to brake down because you are forced to take the unit to get fixed.

If it didn't include a PS2 I would say the consumer target for this product would be none other than WOMEN.

big deal...all it is is a playstation 2 with a dvd recorder and the much needed hard drive that the xbox already has. and If you are willing to buy a playstation with a dvd recorder...odds are you probably already have one of the two ...just my opinion. just keep all the gaming systems for....um what is it? games! thats what they are for, stop trying to make them into toasters/fax machine that cleans your room...

Verbal uses those to give himself massages.

Bah, that's bullshit. While I don't really use my PS2 much anymore, I would hardly say that it sucks.

I've never understood fanboy console gamers with their dependency to a particular system. I've been hearing this same argument since the early 1980s when people would pit the Atari 2600 against the ColecoVision. For a true gamer, it's about the games, and only the games; across all platforms.

A more relevant statement might be: "I/my parents can't afford more than one console, so I talk shit about the ones I don't/can't own."

yawn zZzZzzZ...sure its about the games, but your're taking the fun out of bashing each others system. why don't we all be boring like this and on next sundays football game we all root for both teams and hope they all hug at the end of the game?

anyways fanboys serve a purpose...they spread propaganda for their sytem to anybody they can, in hopes people will buy one, so the system wouldn't die off and can prosper with bigger and better games being developed for their system

but if it makes this ps2 fanboy feel better, the ps2 is a well put together system with okay to good graphics with such great exclusives such as final fantasy, gran turismo, ratchet and clank, etc... and has spawned(though actually on the ps) one of my favorite games of all time, THPS

It's fun to bash each others systems? I don't get how some people can find this pointless bullshit even remotely fun, but then again, I don't jerked off to hentai, either.

Anyway, listening to people argue over which console is better is like listening to people argue over which band is more Punk: Simple Plan or Good Charlotte.

Watching football is boring enough, man, and the way I see it, they might as well hug after the game. They spend enough time patting each other on the ass to begin with. Might as well seal the deal.

A fanboy's real purpose, whether he or she is blatant or in denial, is to make real gamers have a good laugh at their expense.

Ah, yes. The fact that I haven't used my PS2 in months clearly makes me a fanboy. Good job, Sherlock.
