The majority of Americans are not interested in men's soccer, so what makes you think they'd be interested in women's soccer?

The USA winning the FIFA Women's World Cup 1999 made everyone (with money) think that this sport would be profitable in this nation. After all, they had an all-American girl who was/is the best female soccer player in the world and she was very willing to show her breasts after a goal.

I'm quite sure that the WUSA league was somewhat successful during it's premiere year, but attendance must of gone downhill after that. With the FIFA Women's World Cup 2003 just around the corner, the league may have gained some new fans if the US national team was once again victorious. Too late now too find out.

Plain and simple... Soccer, or football, is not America's sport. It was not invented here so it's citizens don't give a shit about it.

Men's soccer (MLS), on the other hand, seems to be gaining popularity. There have already been at least two new stadiums specifically designed for soccer, so at least some big money is being invested into the sport. Either this, or the US was very profitable during the FIFA World Cup 1994 and is looking to make a bid for 2018.

Basketball wasn't invented here either, but seems to be doing okay popularity wise.

There are two reasons why soccer doesn't do well in the US:

1) The American public, with it's short attention span, finds the sport utterly boring.

2) Television advertisers tend to stay away from soccer due to its continuous time periods.

Americans don't like soccer because it's society is racist.

Here in the Southwest if you play soccer you're labeled a 'chicalon'.

Across the nation many people would say, nah thats a beaner or european sport. It carries too many negative conotations.

Still, there is the term soccer moms for a reason. Many of Americans put their young 'animals' in soccer leagues. I've seen soccer leagues throught out California. They have a lot of teams and players.

One problem with soccer is that it cannot compete with the other sports. In high school soccer competes with basketball. If you had to attend a sport, you know to be cool and be 'seen' would you pick the soccer match or the basketball game.

Seriously, could you buy nachos and a soda at a soccer match.

In the Pro's like the REV said there's no money because there are no commercials.

It's all about the Benjamins.

Watch soccer on Mexican television. They know how to be creative when it comes to successfully fitting advertising into this sport.

Whether it's simply superimposing a logo in the center of the field or having realistic billboards popping out next to the goal, Mexican television has this down to a science.

The same creativity is found in radio.

Soccer is the perfect sport for little kids, because it's one of the few sports where being big doesn't necessarily give you an advantage. In football and basketball size can make a big difference in the game, not so much in soccer.

Bigger kids in high school enter sports where they can utilize their size, and because big and tall is "cooler" than short and skinny more students go to the sports the big guys play.

Yeah, but American advertisers think big, big, BIG. They don't want their product displayed on a green-screen billboard out in the sidelines where no one will focus on it, nor do they want it superimposed on the corner of the television screen where it can easily be engulfed by a myriad of statistics. They want to zombify you for 30+ seconds with their flashy, big-budget commercials.

The reason Mexican advertisers are willing to compromise their advertising, be it by green-screen billboards, superimposed logos or by having the commentators slip it in via color talk, is because soccer has fanatical viewers in Mexico. If soccer ever gets similar rating here in the US, trust me, you'll see beer, automobile and tampon advertisements plastered all over the place.

I hope this was a rhetorical question.
