While at Costco last week, I picked up a copy of the new Double Secret Probation Edition Animal House DVD. When I got back to my truck, I realized that I had mistakenly grabbed the Full Screen version of the DVD, so I went back inside and swapped it out for the Widescreen edition without any issues, but the ordeal got me thinking.
Why the hell do companies still put out Full Screen DVDs? Seriously. Who in their right minds would pay hard-earned cash for a butchered version of a movie on DVD? One of the main selling points of the DVD format is the ability to view a movie in your own home the same way it was released in theaters.
Well, one of my friends once gave me his reason for choosing Full Screen DVDs over Widescreen. It was as follows:
"I like Full Screen because, when I watch a movie, I like to see the whole thing. I don't like how they cut off the top and bottom of the movie in Widescreen releases.*"
Think about that for a second.
That's right. Full Screen DVDs are marketed to, and purchased by, morons. I rest my case.
* Of course, this was edited to reflect proper grammar and enunciation. My friend normally speaks like an East L.A. cliché. |

I know exactly how you feel, because I too have come across people that prefer fullscreen because they don't like that "they cut off the top and bottom of the movie". |

I wonder how many women actually buy the widescreen edition.
Really, do you actually think that one day any where in the world a women is going to walk in to an electronic store and purchase a widescreen tv.
"Yes, I'm looking for a 42" widescreen tv"
I'm not talking about plasma tv's since most of them, if not all of them come in widescreen formats. See, here they are only trying to fit into society and not actually wanting to purchase a widescreen tv. |

yes, it's the sides that get cut off, then the picture gets stretched to fit a 4:3 screen. |

yes, it's the sides that get cut off, then the picture gets stretched to fit a 4:3 screen. |
