Hussein Link to 9/11 Lingers in Many Minds
Nearing the second anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, seven in 10 Americans continue to believe that Iraq's Saddam Hussein had a role in the attacks, even though the Bush administration and congressional investigators say they have no evidence of this.

The Raider game today was delayed because of George Dubya's speech and my friend and I were quite upset about it, and (as we waited for the game to start) we started venting about George Dubya.
I told my friend how it pissed me off that George Dubya used the "war on terrorism" as an excuse to violate our civil liberties. My friend responded with, "I've got nothing to hide." I asked him, "So, just because you have nothing to hide, it doesn't bother you that the government can invade your privacy?" His response was, "No." I asked him, "It doesn't bother you that if you criticize your government, they can accuse you of terrorism?" His response was, "As long as I don't do anything illegal, I have nothing to worry about."
If even a small minority of Americans think the way my friend does, then we are surely in a sad state.
The funniest thing about the conversation with my friend is that he finds it very difficult to believe that our government would encroach on our civil liberties if we "have nothing to hide", but still believes that there is a conspiracy against the Raiders in the NFL!
With all due apologies, buddy...You're an ignorant peon. |

George Dubya has done nothing to change the minds of those 7 out of 10 Americans, and has, in fact just kept adding fuel to the fire.
From George W. Bush's Address to the Nation (Sunday, September 7, 2003):
America and a broad coalition acted first in Afghanistan, by destroying the training camps of terror, and removing the regime that harbored al Qaeda. In a series of raids and actions around the world, nearly two-thirds of al Qaeda's known leaders have been captured or killed, and we continue on al Qaeda's trail. We have exposed terrorist front groups, seized terrorist accounts, taken new measures to protect our homeland, and uncovered sleeper cells inside the United States. And we acted in Iraq, where the former regime sponsored terror, possessed and used weapons of mass destruction, and for 12 years defied the clear demands of the United Nations Security Council.
Although, he doesn't straight out say that Iraq has ties to al Qaeda, the fact that he mentions both al Qaeda and Iraq so close together in his speech, surely convinces those 7 out of 10 Americans that they do.
Since America put out the fires of September 11, and mourned our dead, and went to war, history has taken a different turn. We have carried the fight to the enemy. We are rolling back the terrorist threat to civilization, not on the fringes of its influence, but at the heart of its power.
This work continues. In Iraq, we are helping the longsuffering people of that country to build a decent and democratic society at the center of the Middle East.
Here, he evokes the WTC attacks and then goes to say that the war on terrorism has taken us to Iraq. Again, feeding images of an Iraq-alQaeda link to those 7 out of 10 Americans.
Two years ago, I told the Congress and the country that the war on terror would be a lengthy war, a different kind of war, fought on many fronts in many places. Iraq is now the central front. Enemies of freedom are making a desperate stand there -- and there they must be defeated.
I just have one question: When did Iraqi terrorists attack the U.S.?
Personally, my life is no different with or without Saddam Hussein in power, but I guarantee that my life would be a hell of a lot better had George W. Bush not been my president. |

Just wait and see how "foreigners" will treat you, or at least think of you, when you visit an overseas nation.
BTW, did Dubya say "Are you ready for some football?" again? I bet it was one of his top personal goals as president of the United States.
Mission accomplished. |

Even educated men who are given the trust and responsibility of interpretting the law and ensuring fair trials can fall into those 7 out of 10 Americans:
| Associated Press wrote: | Earlier this year, (Judge) Baer had concluded that Iraq aided Osama bin Laden's terror network prior to Sept. 11, 2001, when roughly 3,000 people died in attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a hijacked plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
Baer said lawyers for two victims "have shown, albeit barely ... that Iraq provided material support to bin Laden and al-Qaida." |

I stand corrected.
| cnn.com wrote: | | President Bush said Wednesday there was no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 -- disputing an idea held by many Americans. |
