Someone told me that they read in the newspaper that the Vons in Calexico is closing down in late October.

I haven't confirmed this myself, but it seems pretty believable.

So any of you that live in Calexico that enjoyed a decent beer selection. Stock up now, because pretty soon, you're gonna have to drive to El Centro.

Yeah, they're lease is up in October and they've decided not to renew it.

I was walking around inside the Albertsons in El Centro and I overheard an employee and another person talking about the closure. I wasn't able to hear in on all the conversion, so I wasn't sure if the affected location would be Calexico, El Centro, Brawley or all three.

I figured it was Calexico because of the recent grand opening of Food For Less, the plan to open up a Super Wal-Mart in 2005, and the majority of shoppers moving on to the next cheap thing.

In regards to the selection of beer, Vons may be the best in Calexico, but that can easily be changed. What needs to be done is start requesting your favorite beer at your locally owned liquor store or market.

All you gotsta do is ask (and ask (and ask (and ask (...)))).

Practically the same as Vons, except for a very unnoticeable few.

BTW, Vons doesn't carry their best seller, Lucky Lager, anymore. A 12 pack of 11 oz bottles for approximately $5.50. You just can't beat that, considering all the entertainment they provide as well.

This wont affect the ones in EC and Brawley, but the thing that sucks is that they are going to lay off those with least seniority in EC to make jobs for those with more seniorty from Calexico
we have a bunch of employees from Vons applying at Costco and we are giving them priorty since they come from a good store and their situation sucks.

Why is Vons closing? All it needs to do is tough it out for a couple of months and they'd get most of their clientele back.

I went to Food4Less last night and Jesus Christ, I felt ripped off. I bought 5 small green apples and got charged almost three bucks. Not only that but most of their prices are innacurate. I looked at one price tag, and it read $1.49, then I looked at another price tag for the same product and that one read $1.69. Which is the right price?

I was also looking at some of their prices and I noticed that a 2-liter of soda is about a dollar, and the tag said I was saving $1.50 from Super Market Price. I stopped and thought, what Super Market is this that charges $2.50 for a 2-liter of coke? Not even a gas station charges that much.

The savings there are so bogus.

To further my complaint, not a lot of stuff is what any sane person would call high quality goods. All over the store, all you can find is some "Equate" variation called "Van De Kamp's."

Sad to say, I am actually looking forward to the Super Wal-Mart.

Don't leave us Vons!!!

I agree that if Vons were to wait a bit, their customers will come back.

The thing with Food4Less is that they always have really good deals, but only on a few select items, and they change their specials every week or so.

I personally have enjoyed some of their specials.

The tags must come from corprate offices in a big city where some stores might sell 2-liters for over $2. I know it's common here in the Valley to see all 2-liter sodas for 99-cents, but when i was living in Phoenix it wasn't unusual to see stores selling brand name 2-liter sodas for close to $2.

Something of note for people who believe that bringing in big corporations into the Valley provides steady employment for Valleyites...I heard from a friend of mine that Food4Less has already started laying off employees!

I'm all for a Super Walmart now with their recent news of having a Krispy Kreme inside them.
