FYI:
No alcohol in Mexicali this weekend because of elections. From Friday at midnight, until Sunday at midnight.

You get busted, you go to jail.

Not true. They decided to cancel it this time because it coincides with the Fourth of July weekend and they didn't want to piss off the tourists.

Could be, although I found the following local news article which states otherwise:

Well, you can stock up on beer Thursday and drink it on the weekend, can't you? My understanding is that "la ley seca" just means that no alcohol can be sold that weekend, not that you can't drink.

I think it translated more into: "The authorities better not catch you drinking."

Even in the U.S., you can be taken to jail if you are "found in the streets intoxicated".

According to their laws that means a dry holiday weekend.
so vacationers will have to bring their own booze.

Their is a loop hole for travelers, you can bring alcohol into Mexico with you.

Sounds to me like you can stock up on beer Thursday and drink it on the weekend...just don't drink it in public or be caught intoxicated in public. (Which sounds like good advice in any country, any time of the year.)

During "Ley Seca," alcohol cannot be sold, but it can be consumed, but in the privacy of your own home.

If you are arrested while intoxicated, then the charges are more extreme.

And as far as taking your own alcohol is concerned, a person can only cross 3 liters of alcohol at a time.

Either way, what's the big deal? Can't these people go a weekend without alcohol?
