The other day I passed by the front of the registers at Food4Less and noticed that they have a CoinStar system.

That is all.

Does this give you cash or a voucher?

I have no idea.

Whatever it is they give you, I'm sure they make you bag it yourself.

Neither would I, for that matter.

I've never used a CoinStar, or similar machine, but I must admit, I rank the existence of such a device right up there with butter. Yes, butter.

I ended up going to Sun Community FCU to exchange my coins after all. For members, they provide the service for free if the amount is less than $50, otherwise a 10% service fee is assessed.

To my surprise, the jar contained a little over $90, proving that it pays to put aside all your loose change at the end of the day in a container. The teller or CSR was kind enough to not apply 10% fee, so I got all my money.

The Calexico branch office now has a coin machine. They charge 3% when the machine counts more than $50.00. They charged me the 3% even after insisting they didn't. If I would have tried any harder, people around me would have thought I was robbing the bank.

My jar had over 400 quarters in it. I could have spent hours upon hours at the local arcade.

SCFCU has raised the coin change fee to 10% if you go over $50. That's way too much to pay for changing out my hard earned pennies for dollar bills. I know I contradict myself by saying it was OK with Coinstar charging 9%, but when you really think about it: Taking $10 of your $100 ain't cool.

I'll have to try out Coinstar for the first time. They now offer gift cards to places like Amazon.com, Starbucks, JC Penny without a fee. Their website says the Lucky's location in El Centro is the only here that offers this feature, but someone told me the Food4Less in Calexico does too. I'll have to check out F4L the next time I'm in there buying some beverages.

Can't go wrong with an Amazon GC.
