I've got some spare change at home, in a large jar, that I've been throwing in all my coins into for about a year or so. The jar is almost full and the majority are pennies and nickels, with some dimes and maybe one or two quarters that wasn't able to find the last time I put together enough for a 99 cent Famous Star. I'm pretty sure there are a few pesos in there too.
I think it's time to get rid of my change and get some bills in return. The problem is that I don't want to spend hours rolling up the coins to take to a bank or casa de cambio. I remember long ago there being machine that would convert all your coins inside of the Vons in Calexico, but I'm pretty sure it's no longer there.
Does one exist locally?
I checked out Coinstar, but the closest machine is in San Diego. They also charge about 9% of the amount to change, but I think the fee is fine in return for the convenience. |

The only coin machine I know of is the one at the Sun Community Credit Union (formerly, GAFCU) in El Centro. If you're a member you can convert up to $25 in coins without incurring any fee (if you have more than $25 they charge you %5 of the value of your coins). Unfortunately, you must be a member of the credit union to use this service.
If you're not a member of the credit union, you might want to ask your bank if they have this service. I know that Washington Mutual only accepts coins that are in rolls. |

My jar isn't clear, but if it was we could have people guess the amount. |

| With the money you get converting it, you could buy one of the coin counters for like 5 bucks, then you'll never have to worry about counting your change again. |

I ended up going to Sun Community FCU to exchange my coins after all. For members, they provide the service for free if the amount is less than $50, otherwise a 10% service fee is assessed.
To my surprise, the jar contained a little over $90, proving that it pays to put aside all your loose change at the end of the day in a container. The teller or CSR was kind enough to not apply 10% fee, so I got all my money. |
