F the cooks, they make 25, sometimes 50 cents an hour more than the waitress' do. They don't need the extra money.
Actually, it's usually customary for the waitress' to share their tips with not just the cooks, but also the bus-boys. Do you think it happens here?
While we're on the subject. The waitress' should be the only ones that shouldn't get tipped. All the waitress' do is give you attitude when they're taking your order, wait for the cook to cook it, then take it to you. Afterwards, it's the bus-boys who clean the tables and the dishes, then sets the dishes, dinnerware, etc, in an easily accessible area for the waitress.
Not only that, but a lot of times when the restaurant is busy, it's the bus boys will bring you your drinks and food.
The only time a waitress deserves a tip is when they work in small restaurants, because they usually don't have bus-boys and have to really bust their ass. |

i know the feeling. i used to be a busboy at denny's here in Calecia, and let me tell you, it was not fun. the "servers"* bitch about the busboys, the busboys bitch about the servers. the servers fucken sucked. i would work more hours than most of them, i'd bust my ass, while they'd be on the side chatting it up, yet they felt that we busboys were not entitled to a tip. of course sometimes i'd take it upon myself while cleaning tables to make sure the dick servers didn't get a tip.

Maybe if servers followed these suggestions they'd make more tips:
Restaurant servers who copy their customers' behavior get double the tips of servers who don't do this.
Smile a lot
Greet and even touch the customers
Crouching down beside the customers while taking orders
Giving candy with the bill

Servers want more tip then all they have to do is give me one free round of drinks.
It ain't all that hard if its draft beer. A keg holds about 160-180 beers. What about all the foam, spilling, and other screw ups. They can get away with it. If they do they get a generous tip from me. |

I don't know if that's what they meant, but I'll tell you that when I go to Hooters the waitresses always crouch down enough for me to see cleavage, which convinces me to leave a better than usual tip. |

I've heard that leaving between 17% and 20% is customary, of course the tip has to be earned. I usually tip between this range depending on the level of service.
I find that people who grossly overtip are just as annoying as people who undertip, especially when the bill is going to be split between more than one person. It's like they are trying to show off or trying to make you feel cheap even though you are already leaving an acceptable tip.
In some restaurants, cooks are very well paid or at least paid more than a server. They can sometimes make twice as much as a part-time waitress- up to $45,000 a year. It is for this reason that tips are not shared with cooks. Servers for the most part share their tips with bus boys, food runners and the big winner of the day- the bartender. |
