I am not sure if you were being sarcastic, but here it goes anyway.
I hear a lot of people complain about E.T., but I remember the game being a lot of fun. You had to move around the screens looking for the pieces to put your phone together to call the rescue ship. As you entered a screen, you would push the fire button to raise E.T.'s head and see if you would get a flashing dot at any of the holes. If you did, you had to fall into that hole and pick up the piece. I think there were 3 pieces, and they had to all be different. Once you put the phone together (wich you could see your progress at the top of the screeen) then you would see a digitized picture of E.T. and you would hear him talk, he would say his famous line, 'E.T. Phone Home...'. After that you had to go find the ship's landing spot in the forest (the forest screen with the square in the middle) and the ship would come and get you. Along the way the bad guys would try to capture you and take your phone pieces away, while Eliott would try to help you. By today's standards it sounds kind of lame (ok, maybe really lame), but at the time (1983?) it was a lot of fun. My brother and I were the first on our neighborhood to figure it out, it took us about a week with an English/Spanish dictionary (didn't speak english at the time) and later on we would have timed competitions. I would say we realy got our money's worth out of that one.

I remember E.T. for the Atari 2600. It had to have been the most simplistic game produced by Atari and was a "no brainer." From what I remember reading, the game was written by one of Atari's top game programmers (creator of Yar's Revenge) in a matter of days. The game was a total bust, sales-wise. In fact, 14 or so truck loads of the game cartridges are "rumored" to be buried in a landfill in New Mexico.

Games back in the 80's weren't too complicated, so I'm sure I enjoyed playing it for a few hours, even though it seemed like it was in a continuous loop.
