The truth about Jessica

Her Iraqi guards had long fled, she was being well cared for - and doctors had already tried to free her. John Kampfner discovers the real story behind a modern American war myth

Guardian Unlimited wrote:
Her rescue will go down as one of the most stunning pieces of news management yet conceived. It provides a remarkable insight into the real influence of Hollywood producers on the Pentagon's media managers, and has produced a template from which America hopes to present its future wars.

Guardian Unlimited wrote:
Releasing its five-minute film to the networks, the Pentagon claimed that Lynch had stab and bullet wounds, and that she had been slapped about on her hospital bed and interrogated. It was only thanks to a courageous Iraqi lawyer, Mohammed Odeh al-Rehaief, that she was saved. According to the Pentagon, Al-Rehaief risked his life to alert the Americans that Lynch was being held.

Guardian Unlimited wrote:
"It was like a Hollywood film. They cried, 'Go, go, go', with guns and blanks and the sound of explosions. They made a show - an action movie like Sylvester Stallone or Jackie Chan, with jumping and shouting, breaking down doors." All the time with the camera rolling. The Americans took no chances, restraining doctors and a patient who was handcuffed to a bed frame.

Guardian Unlimited wrote:
The American strategy was to concentrate on the visuals and to get a broad message out. Details - where helpful - followed behind. The key was to ensure the right television footage. The embedded reporters could do some of that. On other missions, the military used their own cameras, editing the film themselves and presenting it to broadcasters as ready-to-go pack ages. The Pentagon had been influenced by Hollywood producers of reality TV and action movies, notably Black Hawk Down.

Guardian Unlimited wrote:
It was perfect reality TV, made with the active cooperation of Donald Rumsfeld and aired just before the Iraqi war. The Pentagon liked what it saw. "What Profiles does is given another in depth look at what forces are doing from the ground," says Whitman. "It provides a very human look at challenges that are presented when you are dealing in these very difficult situations." That approached was taken on and developed on the field of battle in Iraq.

I was thinking. Why is she more of a hero than those who were not caught. She was caught and they had to rescue why does that make her more of a hero. There are soldiers that never got caught.
On that note she is a brave and strong woman. but she as much of a hero as anyone over there.

Fuck Jessica Lynch. I resent the fact that she's been turned into a poster child for POWs. She only serves to detract from all the other soldiers who were held prisoner during this war (And I use the term war lightly. The U.S. military attacking Iraq is akin to a kid with a pocket full of M-80s attacking an ant hill.)

Can anyone here list the names of all the other POWs without doing a search on the Web? I know I can't. But I do remember a few of those other POWs looking like they had just gotten their asses kicked by meth-crazed kangaroos. Why didn't they get the same attention from the media? I guess only young, white females make the collective American heart bleed.

See you in Hustler, Jessica.

The Bush administration is just setting us up for the next battle in the war on terrorism. I don't doubt that we'll go through one more "war" before the elections in '04.

We're slowly learning more and more about the true story of Jessica Lynch.

msnbc news wrote:
Initial news reports...said that Lynch fought fiercely, was stabbed and shot multiple times, and that she killed several of her assailants...

Lynch’s story is far more complex and different than those initial reports...

Lynch tried to fire her weapon, but it jammed, according to military officials familiar with the Army investigation. She did not kill any Iraqis. She was neither shot nor stabbed, they said...

Lynch was riding in a Humvee when it plowed into a jacknifed U.S. truck — a precarious position that led to major injuries, including multiple fractures and compression to her spine, that knocked her unconscious, military sources said. The collision killed or gravely injured the Humvee’s four other passengers.

I wonder if, after Hollywood makes The Jessica Lynch Story, they'll make a sequel about the lies the U.S. propaganda machine put out to the American people.

GULF WAR II heroine Jessica Lynch was yesterday hit by a vicious sex-smear campaign.

Two ex-comrades tried to sell Globe magazine images, they claim show her topless and simulating sex, for £120,000.

Private Jessica, 20, was horrifically injured when her convoy was ambushed in Nasiriyah.

She was rescued in a night raid — and became a millionaire with a book and film deal.

One troop, identified only as Bobby, bitterly said Jessica needed to be brought down a peg.

He said: “She’s not squeaky clean like everyone thinks.”
