I know a lot of songs sound like other songs, but sometimes it's just pretty damn obvious when the newer song is a copy (or greatly influenced by it). There are the famous ones like MC Hammer's and Vanilla Ice's, but then there are others that seem to go about (unnoticed) making their millions by taking an existing riff and calling it their own.
The most recent one I've noticed is the White Stripes' Seven Nation Army. That riff sounds a lot like the Ramones' (or Dee Dee Ramone's) The Crusher. It may be coincidence or maybe not, though I just thought I'd give Dee Dee his props.
Do you know of any other bands that are capitalizing from other (unknown or uncredited) bands? |

A perfect example of a spooge band stealing from a legendary band, getting away with it, and making millions in the process:
The riff and lyrical structure of Pennywise's "Bro Hymn" were, without a doubt, stolen from the Butthole Surfers' "Human Cannonball." |

Lusid's Chaotic Girl was an exact replica of the Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop. They copied the whole damned thing. We used to yell out: Hey! Ho! Let's go! everytime they played it.
And somehow, I always got blamed.
I'm looking in your direction ramrod. |

When i was a kid I always thought that Belinda Carliel or what ever the fuck ex go-gos chick's song Heaven is a Place on Earth sounds alot like Bon Jovi's Livin on a prayer. I think I have the right song names.

| Just about every Oasis song sounds like a rip-off from another band. |

I think that Pasamos 200 Kilos de Coca by Los Vigilantes is very similar, both in melody and content, to Cruzamos 200 Kilos the Mota by Los Mafiosos.
Maybe my ears are just not trained to recognize the subtle intricacies of accordion music.
Don't even get me started on Mi Tio el Coyote Cruzo 200 Mojados by El Guero Sanchez. Total rip off. |

Another (old) blatant rip off is Weezer's Hash Pipe. It sounds identical to some unknown band named The Shods who wrote a song called He Shot Himself Up.
Here's the (old) scoop:
| Buddyhead wrote: | | Oh, and you know Weezer's hit single "Hashpipe", is actually not really a Weezer song? It was originally written by a band called The Shods from Boston who opened for Rivers on a few of his acoustic shows. The Shods song is called "He Shot Himself Up", download it from audiogalaxy and compare. The Shods song was on an album that was never released (but will be soon) but was a regular feature of their set for years. Rivers was apparently such a huge fan of the band that he used to shout out and request "He Shot Himself Up" live and had Kevin, the Shods guitarist teach it to him. He was also such a huge fan that he thought it would be a good idea to blatantly steal the song's riff and use it for himself. Bomb dude. |

Who could possibly forget Eminem's "My Name Is"? Obviously a blatant rip off of Banda Maguey's hit single "El Ranchero Rap". |
