After a long night of drinking, el christ and I decided to go south of the border to get something to eat. It was about 1:00am, so we decided to cross on foot and look for a hot dog seller. We walked about four blocks and came upon a magical street. The whole block was lined with window eateries, armed with discos. We had a nice sampling of fritters, but the star of the evening had to be the soft-meatless flautas. It was just tortillas soaked in a delicious salsa and topped with cheese and cabbage. Pretty good stuff for not even being flautas. We ate at four different places and spent a grand total of $7. Not bad at all.

These are real flautas, at least real Mexicali flautas. You're lucky if you even get a thread of meat inside each one.
They were delicious.

The best flautas in the world are the ones without meat.
The ones that have meat don't have enough meat to give it flavor, only to give you the impression that something's missing. |

Meatless flautas and an impromptu game of grab-ass.
Hell of a good time.
Only the members of the meatless flauta covenant will ever know what I'm talking about. |

Dude, getting meat in Mexicali flautas is like getting a curly fry in your order of regular fries. It's a nice surprise but you can't always expect it. |
