Nothing pisses me off more than a restaurant that everyone hypes up about being the best in the area. Everybody seems to swear by it, so you decide to try it out only to find out that it isn't that great or even worse... it blows.
The one restaurant that comes to mind is Johnny's Burritos in Brawley. Everyone, the majority being of caucasian descent, claims that this place has the best burritos, tacos and whatever else they serve. For years I heard the same thing over and over again. I ended up trying it out long ago this one (rare) time I had to go to Brawley and had myself a burrito.
I ate the burrito and thought it was nothing special, but I still kept hearing everyone hyping up this place. I had enough one day as my co-workers and I had lunch at a local restaurant, so I said that place blew. I think they were offended by this.
F'em. |

For years I heard the hype about this place too. It does suck.
There is absolutely nothing special about this place at all. My theory is that most of the people who like this place have a good excuse to think it's great. And that excuse is because their parents suck at cooking. Other than that, I don't know what it could be. |

The only place I can think about right now is Mandolino's. Everyone has always said that it was really nice (sometimes fancy), and that the food was delicious!
The place is whatever, decorated with Godfather posters everywhere (how lame), and the food is ok. I'd only go there if I really wanted italian food, I didn't feel like cooking, and it was the closest place to go eat. Other than that, there is no real reason to go (although, I hear the bar is ok). |

These same people seem to glorify their "breakfast burritos" as well. I've had those too and they're OK. In fact, most breakfast burritos that I've had taste about the same, with the exception of the McBurritos or whatever they may be called.

I think Mandolino's is a nice to place to eat at, but the food is terrible. The last time I dined there I ordered lasagna*, only because I thought it was a safe bet and they couldn't possibly screw it up. Boy, I was wrong.
I've had better lasagna from a can of Chef Boyardee.
* I know, I know. It's the cliche dish to order at an Italian "bistro." |

Like The Red Fox Room in San Diego, CA. Their much-touted steaks are average at best.
The only thing it's got going for it is that it's dark inside, thus sparing me from getting a good look at all the freaky geriatrics that work and hang out there. |

| Yum Yum used to be really good, but the quality of their food has dropped greatly. I think that Yum Yum survives off the memories of people that used to eat there when it was good. |

That and their amazingly cheap lunch deals.
I'll have the AA. |

I'm not sure if people still rave about this place, but Guadalajara's sucks ass. That place has to have the most unauthentic authentic Mexican food I've ever had.
I don't know what secret recipe they put in that place either, because for some reason, everytime I went there, I got diarrhea cha cha cha. |

| The most glorious cases of the runs have to originate from bootleg mex hot dogs or jandos as the natives call them. |
