Have any of you ever tasted Sopa de Tortilla? It's delicious. Ive had it a few times in different places in Mexico, and I think it's one of, if not the, best soups I've ever tasted. I found a couple recipes in different places, which I've mixed together and deleted some ingredients to make my own. People that have tried it have seemed to really like it...or, maybe they were just being nice. I'm not sure.
It's basically a chicken broth mixed with tomatos and chile pasilla. Chicken breasts can be added to make it a bit more hearty. Then fried tortilla strips, chicharrones, avacado chunks, mozzerella chunks, and toasted chile pasilla pieces are added once served. It's really good.
If you've never tried it, and it sounds appealing, check it out. Just don't order it at a chain restaurant like Chile's, El Torito, Claim Jumper, etc. It needs to be homemade or in a restaurant that cooks homemade style. I tried it once at Heidelberg in Mex, but it wasn't very good either.
Does anyone know of a good place to get tortilla soup? |

I believe the first time I tried it was at Las Villas in Mexicali (on Justo Sierra) and it was delicious.
BTW, anyone seen the movie Tortilla Soup? It totally sucks. |

| I've heard that there is a restaurant across the street from Kennedy's Market in Heber that serves sopa de tortilla, but I've never tried it. Has anyone been there? |

I've been to this restaurant... it's named Tortillas. The food there is mediocre and the service isn't anything special. We went there for a colleague's birthday lunch and they swore it was da bomb. I totally disagree.
The only good experience was seeing the waiter spill some jamaica on my boss's white shirt and he didn't even notice. |

Or maybe it was at the Spanish Kitchen in Calexico. |

Had lunch today at the new restaurant Tortilla Soup in El Centro. What did I order? What else, but tortilla soup.
I've only had it at one other place before, but this one was a lot better. They added chicharones and aguacate, plus a few chile bits. I had myself a small bowl for $3.25, which was plenty to fill me up after eating all the chips and salsa the waiter brought over.
Overall, very good. |
