Something is very wrong when the ice cream man makes his way through the old neighborhood after sunset. Lately I've noticed that this is a new trend with the ice cream man. You don't hear the ice cream song, which as a child was once a mesmorizing tune and now a total nuisance, until the sky is in complete darkness.
When I was a kid, the ice cream truck would cruise the streets when everyone was out playing in the sun. During the weekends he'd make an effort to pass by a little earlier and sometimes even twice a day. Now the ice cream man is always late.
I have a theory* why this is happening and hopefully I am completely wrong. You see, we have new neighborhoods which inhabit the families who are much better off** than the ones my friends and I grew up with. This isn't our fault, but our parents, I suppose. Anyway, I have a feeling that the ice cream man is very well aware of this.
The ice cream man is not here to put a smile on the faces of the kids who are his customers. He is here to make money, so he services the kids who live in the newer neighborhoods who have more to spend. Once he has finished part of his route, he heads off to sell ice cream to his other customers.
Nothing wrong with this, right? He's doing what's in the best interest of his business... which is selling ice cream. What I do see wrong here is that the ice cream man zips on by in the dark, not driving at a slow enough speed to allow the children to call his attention to make him stop, so they can get their ice cream. I don't think the ice cream man cares.
Maybe it's because he's made enough money for the day and figures he might as well just sprint through the other neighborhoods and if someone happens to run in front of his truck, he'll stop. Or maybe it's just because he likes to drive fast. Regardless, it's just not fair to the kids***.
So give them a chance to get their daily snack, Mr. Ice Cream Man.
* If my theory is correct, then there is money to be made in the local ice cream man business.
** It could also be that newer neighborhoods tend to have more kids than the older ones.
*** And it's not fair to me either.

I don't care if the ice cream man passes by my street at 6 in the morning, or midnight. I'm still in shock in the fact that like two weeks ago, an ice cream truck passed through my street. It had been like ten years since an ice cream truck had passed through my street. He hasn't come back though. I guess he didn't make enough profit.
COME BACK ICE CREAM MAN!!! |

| Maybe the ice cream man lives in your neighborhood, and he was just getting home from work. The other thing is, I guess I live in one of those hoods where the folks are "better off", and I have never seen an ice cream in 17 years. I guess the ice cream guy knows that we only eat gelatto. Less hatin', more congratulatin' on our refined taste buds. |

Or it could also be that the ice cream man knows you're all a bunch of penny pinchers. |

| The Ice cream man is a homo, he only fuckin' works in the valley during winter. I never fuckin' see the dude in Summer, maybe he has a shitty radiator. Any way in my summers in San Jose I remember like 40 different Ice Cream trucks would pass a day. Does any one else remember the "big city" ice cream man |

Isn't there a paletero who walks with his cart around downtown Calexico selling Mexican ice cream? Like bolis and paletas de agua natural?
I thought I remember seeing one long ago. |
