Today my dad asked me, "Guess what movie I saw today?" I answered, "Which one?" He said, "The Disorderlies".
Why was that conversation significant? Because that was the first movie we ever bought for our very first VCR. (Ahh, nostalgia.)
I know a lot of you have movie collections. Just out of curiosity what was/were the first movie/s in your video collections.
P.S. The first movie I bought for my DVD player was "Suicide Kings". |

I own a VCR and a DVD player, but I have yet to purchase my first new (packaged) movie. I've only purchased the following two (used) movies, in VHS format, which was at the swap meet for under $2 each.
- Citizen Kane
- Ewoks: The Battle for Endor
BTW, Teek fucking rocks!
I think the reason I haven't bought any new movies is mainly because of the movie industry's marketing ploys. It really pisses me off to see a movie I want available as several releases (e.g. - Collector's Edition, Director's Cut, Director's Collector's Edition, God's Cut, Bob's Cut, and so on) and very well knowing that in less than one year they will come up with a "newer and better" version.
Although if Las Caguamas Ninjas was available in DVD format, I can guarantee you that'd be my first. |

Yeah, that really bothers me, too. I've yet to buy any movies (for myself*) that cost more than ten bucks.
*I have bought more expensive movies for my kids. |

Actually, to the casual observer, this might appear to be the case, but it doesn't happen nearly as frequently as you make it out to be. Besides, that's why any film fan who wishes to build a library of of DVDs visits DVD news Web sites to keep up to date on current and future releases. The only one who really gets screwed is the impulse shopper.
There are no marketing ploys. There may be badly produced DVDs, but there is no conspiracy. Let's use the two DVD releases of The Fellowship of the Ring as an example (Well, three releases actually, but who cares about bookends and a National Geographics special, anyway?) Anyone who even bothered to read up on the film's DVD release knew that there was going to be a bigger, better edition coming out a few months after the theatrical cut was released on DVD. If they were dumb enough to buy the theatrical cut, then they deserve what they got.
I do my research before I buy a DVD. I know if a "Whatever Edition or Cut" is going to be released in a year or two. So I wait. And, if a newer, remastered version of one of the DVDs I own is re-released sometime later, you bet your ass I'll pick it up. (It's funny how nobody complains about remastered CD being reissued, especially when they include bonus tracks -- even in the age of MP3s, et al. Same difference.)
I own a ton of DVDs. I haven't counted them recently, but it's safe to say I have over 125. Out of all those DVDs, only six of them have been replaced by re-releases. Not a bad ratio.
I know what some of you might be thinking. "What about the Evil Dead Trilogy? Aren't there like, 1000 different DVD releases?" Yes. There probably are. But I only own one repeat in the series. The Nercronomicon-bound copy of The Evil Dead DVD (a repeat, since I also own the Anchor Bay DVD that includes the same material.) As for the other two films in the series, I only own one of each. Anchor Bay's Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn DVD, and Anchor Bay's definitive, two disc set of Army of Darkness (#567 out of 30,000.) Why Anchor Bay? Because those are the best releases to get. (See how that work? Research.)
Edit: I would recommend staying away from the Universal Pictures DVD release of Army of Darkness, though.
Edit: Stay away from the Army of Darkness Bootleg Edition DVD, while you're at it. Get yourself a copy of the Boomstick Edition DVD. It includes both copies of the movie at a good price. (Actually, it includes the same material as the copy of my two disc set, except it's not a limited, individually numbered release.)
Newer and better. Well, if you wait long enough, there's eventually going to be a newer and better version of everything, let alone DVDs. Not a very practical approach to being frugal.

A perfect example. I didn't purchase Tombstone on DVD years ago because I was well aware that the Tombstone Vista Series DVD was in the works. I waited for a few years for it to be released and now I can get the version of the DVD that I always wanted. |

A perfect example. I didn't purchase Tombstone on DVD years ago because I was well aware that the Tombstone Vista Series DVD was in the works. I waited for a few years for it to be released and now I can get the version of the DVD that I always wanted. |
are there any major differences like extra scenes and stuff. |

| By the way, my first DVD was From Dusk Till Dawn: Dimension Collector's Series. I purchased this edition because it's a two disc set that includes the feature-length documentary "Full Tilt Boogie," as well as a ton of extra features. Can't remember when I bought it, but it was the same month it came out some years ago. |

| My fisrt movie to my Collection is one of the best of all time The Shawshank Redemption god ive seen that movie like 25 times and its still good. |
