I am appalled by the comments that Flowers by Annette owner, Annette Tafoya, recently made in an article on the Imperial Valley Press newspaper. Annette is complaining about the fact that vendors are setting up shop on sidewalks, street corners and other locations throughout the city of Calexico and lowering her sales profits.

Flowers by Annette wrote:
"They took a lot of my profits. ... The city should do something," she said.

She is suggesting that these vendors be forced to run their business at one of the local swap meets, since this is where she believes they belong.

Flowers by Annette wrote:
Tafoya said the city could ship the vendors to the swap meet, which she thinks is the proper place for unestablished businesses.

This last comment personally offended me. I know many families who's business(es) only operate inside of swap meets. The income these families earn sustain their entire family and more.

So what exactly does she mean by unestablished businesses? These businesses that operate inside the swap meets possess valid city business licenses and permits, pay local, state and federal taxes, and contribute to the rest of the community as well. They must meet the same needs that all other established businesses must meet.

Is her definition of an unestablished business one that does not have walls, a roof and air conditioning? Or is it that they don't have a designated telephone number? Or is her definition someone who is scum?

What is it?

I think she's talking about those people who set up shop during Valentine's and mother's day in just about every corner. I've always wondered how those people get away with it.

I wonder if Annete considers businesses that only operate on the internet unestablished businesses. I wonder what the people at Amazon would think about that.

I know plenty people whose business is the swap meet business and they do plenty good in it. Sounds like Annete doensn't want to adapt to the changing marketplace. I personally think that buying flowers in a shop, be it a stall or brick&mortar, is better than buying from a street vendor. The quality is sometimes just not there.

maybe this bitch is afraid of a little competition. sound familiar local store owners that fought against food 4 less, the super wal-mart, and just about any big name business that wants to come to calexico?
