For over an hour during my drive home tonight, I listened to a talk show host and his callers rant about how everyone who questions the validity of the impending war with Iraq is ignorant and unpatriotic. How anybody who doesn't answer to the president's call to arms must be stupid not to see the connection between what the United States did in Afghanistan, and what the U.S. must do in Iraq (i.e., the link between Al-Qaida and Iraq.)
Above else, the one thing that most caught my attention was that everyone who called in, including the host, firmly believed that our country's foreign policy had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Since I did not have an opportunity to call the show and say my part, I'll do it here, on the Calecia.com forum.
During the Soviet-Afghan War, the Unites States provided mujahedeen rebels with weapons and intelligence in order to assist them in fighting, and eventually defeating, the Soviets. This assistance from the U.S. set in motion the chain of events that lead to the Taliban taking control of Afghanistan, who then offered asylum to Osama bin Laden, and in turn, began harboring Al-Qaida terrorists.
Likewise, during the Iran-Iraq War, the United States assisted Iraq in their colonialist attempt to reclaim land from Iran by providing them with weapons and intelligence to fight against Iran, but only after Kuwaiti oil tankers were attacked by Iran in the Persian Gulf. (Kill all the people you want, but don't touch our oil, right?) Of course, the Iran-Contra hearings proved the U.S. was helping out Iran at the same time, thus demonstrating to the Middle East that the U.S. should not be trusted.
By getting involved in the Iran-Iraq War, we secured Saddam Hussein's place on the throne and strengthened his influence over the region.
So, yes, the talk show host and his callers were right. There is a link between Iraq and Al-Qaida. Unfortunately, that link is the United States. But, just because the U.S. is standing in the middle, it doesn't necessarily prove that the other two have anything to do with each other.
And yes, while it is true that not everyone who opposes or hates the United States may attribute it directly to our foreign policy, there is no denying that our penny wise, pound foolish stance on global affiars is what set the wheels in motion. |

Jim Hightower: Make Congress Decide Bush's Iraq Attack *
If this war does happen, it will be in direct violation of the United States' constitution. I wonder if some people will seek President Bush's impeachment with the same ferocity with which they went after Clinton.

On my way here from Phoenix, I came across three or four talk shows with the same ideology. What made me laugh was how anytime a caller with a different viewpoint called and made valid arguments, the host would argue with nonsequitors and interrupt and basically just keep the callers from finishing their arguments. |
