Brown Act Violations
Romo and De La Rosa break the law and cost the district money such as when they pink-slipped all administrators. Administrators filed a complaint against the district because Romo and De La Rosa (and Pacheco) discussed confidential information out of Board meetings. Months later, administrators were rehired. This cost the district money because they had to pay personnel to work on the notices and pay lawyers to settle the complaint. When Romo and De La Rosa target administrators they threaten the cultures of our schools. This hurts students, teachers, and the community as a whole.
Poor Decision Making
In September 2009, Romo and De La Rosa voted to consolidate the 9th grade athletic program. Instead of having 9th grade sports teams at the 3 junior highs, there will be one 9th grade team at CHS. This results in fewer opportunities for our children to participate in sports and left many unanswered questions. Romo and De La Rosa voted for this without having a thoughtful, written plan in place on the evening of the board meeting when the motions were made. Also, De La Rosa requested and received confidential student records, which he admitted to in the Calexico Chronicle.
Shady Land Negotiations
Without going through the proper channels, Romo and De La Rosa tried to buy 70-75 acres of undeveloped land for $50,000 an acre when it was only worth approximately $5,000. If citizens hadn't been paying attention, the district would have spent 3.75 million dollars for land that is worth $375,000!
Costly Expenditures
- Superintendent search. It could've cost $3,000 but Romo and De La Rosa (and Pacheco) voted to outsource the search and it ended up costing the district $28,000.
- In November 2009, two months after they consolidated 9th grade athletics as a “cost saving” measure, Romo and De La Rosa (and Pacheco) voted to buy band uniforms for all three junior highs and CHS. At the time they didn't know where the funds would come from or how much it would cost. We now know it will cost the district $250,000.
Disrespectful Attitude
Romo and De La Rosa raise their voices, point fingers, and insult their colleagues and the public. Trustee Romo verbally harassed a teacher during Back to School Night at Enrique Camarena. As elected officials, they should refrain from such behavior. Calexico deserves better representation.
• Romo and De La Rosa give Calexico Unified a bad name
• Romo and De La Rosa are unprofessional and they're hurting the educational community
• We demand a board that makes decisions that benefit students’ education
• If we allow them to continue to on the Board, it is like accepting their behavior as appropriate
Keeping them on our school board for three more years is what will be costly, not the cost of a recall! We must stop Romo and De La Rosa from damaging CUSD! |
