We need our own Fourth of July celebration (with a fireworks display) in Calexico even if it costs the city $15K.

Does anyone disagree?

I agree. If Calexico wants to stand out from the rest of the Valley it has to put up it's own entertainment and give people a reason to want to come to Calexico.

Calexico needs to celebrate the 4th of July.

As young naïve lad, I could not wait for either the 4th or 16th celebrations at the park. After all, it was the only time I could score some of those neon-glow-in-the-dark necklaces and buy fireworks. Then as time passed, I noticed a shift. The 4th of July celebration was smaller, less organized, and each year the firework show seemed to disappear. I believe one year there was no fireworks show. However, the 16th and the Mariachi Festival gain steam.

After reading Hilda Carrillo’s comments to the IVP, it makes sense why the 4th celebration has dwindled in our city, but it has to stop. It makes sense for cities close to IVC, like El Centro, Imperial, and Holtville to send their money to Freedom Fest. However, Calexico is just far enough not to make sense. I highly doubt that many Calecianos drive to Bucklin Park to stroll around when they can visit any of there near by parks. Thus, there is no reason to make them drive 15 miles north on 111 to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day.

Okay... Yeah, Hildy is the reason why Calexico is a failure. Don't take everything thing so literal and learn to read between the lines. If you can't do that on here, then you need to hop on another website.

It's the Chamber of Commerce's (including Hildy Carrillo) job to get things done and promote the city. It's in her best interest to have the pool open. Consider it a PR move. And yes, we all understand that the CoC already contributes to the county-wide 7/4 festivities, so why duplicate? Also, the cost of a fireworks display is anywhere from $10K to $20K, so it's not economically viable. Although it never stopped Calexico from putting on the event. It's also not stopping it from paying someone who's jumping ship another $50K (city manager)... I guess the neon yellow t-shirt fund-raiser served a purpose. If that means concentrating only on having a Fourth of July event in Calexico, then let it be.

I would guess that anywhere from 30-50% of the citizens in Calexico can not make the drive out to IVC for whatever reason. Having it in Calexico builds a bigger sense of community. When everyone realizes that Calexico is the bastard child of Imperial County and we must go our own way most of the time, we'll be much better off.

BTW, give me a budget and I'll show you an event.

Calecia Day (3-13).

Ok im not saying i didnt enjoy the 4th of july. to me i would also was eager for that day. I LOVE fireworks since i was little. i remember mi parents didnt had money so they gave me $5 to buy fireworks. And if i was lucky i would get $10 so those days were very special to me too.
You know what,... lets all contribute to next years 4th of july and make it so big so that the valley would want to come to calexico. But lets take action, instead of just complaning. I will personally talk to Hildy and Louis Fuentes. Who is with me?

I can't say there was much complaining. If anything, elchrist started a thread to bring back the festivities back to this great city of ours.

Action by us, the constituents, will be confronted with the ever so easy response that times our tough and money is short. Yet, funding and support by local businessmen are behind the Calexico's Mariachi Festival. It's evident that the 4th of July is not in the mind of our representatives. If it was, we would be celebrating it this Saturday at Kiki.

Let freedom ring....

I love the 4th of Julys in Calexico(Bucklyn Part). One of the things that sticks out are those neon green glowing necklaces. I'm sure everybody knows what I'm talking about.

Elchrist, you should sell some shirts that read:

I *heart here* CLX I would deffinately buy those, no doubt!

I had no idea there was no 4th of July festivities this year...I went out of town, but trust me, I wanted to be in Calexico, eating Churritos, drinking Horchata, and just strolling around the park having fun...

Proud to be an American, proud to be a Caleciano(the land of the 6 Jack-in-the-boxes)

Damn RIGHT!!!
