If you've ever driven back into Calexico from Mexicali, you've seen the plethora of panhandlers and salespeople that weave in and out of traffic.
You've been descended upon by deadly ninjas hellbent on squeegeeing the bugs off your windshield or wiping down your vehicle's exterior with oily rags.
You've heard all the music, witnessed all the dances.
You've listened to all the sob stories a beggar ever got up the will to walk, hop, roll, crawl or just plain sit on the street, to tell you.
You've mastered your rejection techniques and no one is getting your spare change.
What about a guy breathing fire 10 feet into the air? That's right.
Tonight I bared witness to to the birth of Extreme Panhandling. I'm sorry to say I didn't have any spare change or small bills to hand the guy, but I swear, this guy deserves every cent he collects tonight (if nothing more than for raising the bar in border-crossing entertainment.)
Fire breathing. Awesome.
If you happen to see him, please encourage him. Ask him to bring his friends next time. |

I've seen this guy! I took my kids to Mexicali a few months back and we gave him 50 pesos (10 pesos for every time he did his stunt right outside my window).
He carries a gallon of fluid (I assumed it was gasoline, by the aroma) and a torch, he takes a swig of the fluid, and then spits it up at the torch. Very cool. |

Yeah, I've seen that too. A few years back, an INS agent and I stood by and watched a guy cook and shoot up what must have been heroine a few feet from the international line. |

Once when I was crossing back from mex at about 4 am (slacks and long sleeve shirt) and the INS agent told me to show him my arms.
My response was "You got to be kidding me"
I guess I looked like a damn tecato, but wouldn't the smell of a brewery tip him off that I was super drunk. |
