Before you get so defensive, no one was asking for Coach Silva to step down. One guy, posted that Pascual should take over, as an apparent shot at the football team and not the coach himself. If you couldn’t decipher that, then you need to put down the playbook and start learning reading comprehension.

I don’t know what connections Coach Silva has, but apparently he has some good ones even though he stopped playing many years ago. Over the weekend I had the same discussion about how important it is to have connections as a coach. However, if you don’t have any connections, any coach who has a telephone, internet, and video equipment can help promote his/her players.

First, if the coach knows that his/her players can play in the next level, whether small or big school, he/she has to start making calls or at least video taping his games (most coaches do this anyway). Second, the coach should go to the Audio/Visual teacher on campus (I believe Mr. Chaney is the video production teacher), go to the journalism/yearbook teacher, or the ASB director (Mr. Noriega) and strike a deal with them. Ask them in a professional manner if they could help you out. Say something like I have a couple of kids I need people to specifically videotape during games, and if there could be some sort of extra credit or in-class assignment for having their students go to games, record the players, and edit the material to only include the physical attributes that scouts are looking for. Then once a video is made, make copies, add a cool song, and distribute them to coaches around the country. If money is tight, post it here on C.com and/or youtube, and send those coaches an e-mail with the specific link. Third, make players right a cover letter expressing their interest to play for that certain school, grades, and anything else that would convince the coach/scout to take a closer look. Fourth, ask parents, booster, and/or the community to help out. Finally, making the playoffs always helps because scouts are at the games, so it vital to know sell your players before the game.

It pays off to have connections, and you’re a testament to that. Though, next time you put a list of football players that Coach Silva help sent to college, also include the list of players he just sent to college. A varsity coach should strive to send all his athletes to college not just his star players.

As for names of who can coach the team, well I don’t have specific names, but I’m willing to bet that some of the Class of 2003 who played college football will be qualified to take over. Again, that time is not here or now, but don’t assume that there’s no one out there to take over.

I have to admit that, while I thought verbal's suggestions were very shrewd and practical (they made me want to start coaching -- they sounded like so much fun), I couldn't see these two guys in particular being helpful (Chaney and Noriega, not that they aren't good guys and not that they dont work tirelessly for Calexico students, I just didn't see them going out of their way to help a handful of football players). Just the same, you know how football coaches feed players the idea that no one believes in them and that everyone is against them? You recognize that's a motivational tool, don't you dagdagan? People aren't actually attacking you with every word they say.

Look, there’s nothing wrong with being defensive about your coach, but now you’re just being negative about the whole situation. I proposed solutions, but never said it was easy. As RandR said, he doesn’t see Chaney or Noriega helping out, but the way one approaches them matters a lot. Also, just because they said no the first time doesn’t mean you have to stop trying. Change it up, and ask how they can help. Maybe they can help by just video taping, or just editing, or letting you use their software, or finding other students who might be willing to help outside their classes. For example, ask Chaney to put a flyer on his wall that reads, “Want to help edit the Dog’s 08-09 season? Or go creative. Then ask Noriega the same thing. Students in ASB are going to college and they need extra-curricular activities to set themselves apart. What better way then to say they made not just one, but four videos for the football team that were sent to colleges coaches around the country and posted on youtube. Remember, not everyone in ASB is in sports or band, so they need things like these. Also, you have 2,137 students at your disposal.

You’re problem is assuming when people tell you no, that the idea is over. Son, it’s only the beginning. Life is hard, why should being a coach of any varsity program be any different? Ok, talk to the parents and the community and see if they can videotape their sons/daughters. Why even stop there? You said the team has a lot of injuries, well make those players record the games. Then when the coach is going over game film he can simply have a video log and record the time of a play he might want to use later. Then he can give the video logs and DVD’s to a 3rd party who can edit the material. Once the videos are edited then the coach himself can rearrange the clips. Have the student find a cool song. Whoola. Not an easy process by any stretch of the imagination, but the key is willing to continue the process with a positive state of mind. After all this ain’t boot camp.

Oh, and my ignorance is derived from real life examples. You assume I talk without thinking, but my copycat concept has already been done by a Calexico coach. And guess what? That coach didn’t have Chaney or Noriega’s support, as he coaches at Vincent. Check the video out, you might learn a thing or two.

I enjoy a good momma joke no matter who it's coming from or where it's directed. But clearly Silva is very close to you. I admire your passion, and I guess I'll leave it at that.
