Mine was a little over $200 bones.

I was dreading this billing period since last year it was close to $250. The interesting thing is that I used more electricity this past billing cycle than I did 12 months ago. I haven't analyzed the two bills, but I'm guessing the price of power went down.

I still need to replace many light bulbs to CFLs, but the main energy hog is my AC unit. I need to get a hybrid system that uses ice cubes and is hamster-powered.

I think it's the opposite. I think the ECA went up slightly. Everybody I've talked to about this has seen their power bills go up big time from last year. Mine was $210 last time and $260 this time. Once buddy paid $525.

I looked at the bar graph and the usage for last year is less, but the I remember charge being way more.

2-story house?

There's no way I could pay that much without punching myself in the balls.

Everyone I know who spends that much has a two story house and a low efficiency AC.

To save a little money I leave the AC fan on constantly when I'm home and turn on room and ceiling fans.

Some folks like shutting the vents off in rooms they don't use much, but that can backfire. If air doesn't flow through your AC's duct system properly it will run less efficiently.

I spent $144 last month. My house is 2 story and 1410 sq ft.

I was actually wondering about that. Today when I was leaving my shack, I turned off all of the ceiling fans. I thought about leaving them on, but I wasn't sure if it would save or cost me more energy.

I know that turning your ac off when you leave your house for the day can actually cost you more energy, since your ac will have to work harder to get back to the normal home temperature.

So just to clarify. Are you recommending leaving your ceiling fans on all of the time?

Someone is always home at my place so for me it's simple: if the AC is on, I have every damn fan available on too. Fans do consume energy, but it's nothing compared to your AC's compressor being on. So if you can circulate the air in your house using ceiling or stationary fans, as well as your AC's fan, you'll keep the compressor from having to come on as often.

Also, generally speaking (as in if you don't have a high efficiency AC), if you set your thermostat any lower than 77 degrees you might as well lube up your wallet because the electric bill is going to rape it.

The $525 was from a friend with a one-story house, a low-efficiency overpowerful AC and a pool.

Apart from backfiring, does it save you money on a month to month basis?

Another question: What's the best setting for your thermostat?

I've been told that it's best to leave a constant degree (eg - 78) for the entire day as the AC will run more efficiently.
