Only a few hours left before using your cell phone without a hands free device is illegal. Big boost for cell phone accessory vendors and more cyborgs on the road and on the streets talking to themselves.

Does this law apply to law enforcement? I see lots of cops and BP driving around using their (personal) mobile phone, so I wonder if we'll see a stop to that.

Read section (d) of VC 23123
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc23123.htm

Section 165
An authorized emergency vehicle is:

(a) Any publicly owned and operated ambulance, lifeguard, or lifesaving equipment or any privately owned or operated ambulance licensed by the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol to operate in response to emergency calls.

(b) Any publicly owned vehicle operated by the following persons, agencies, or organizations:

(1) Any federal, state, or local agency, department, or district employing peace officers as that term is defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Part 2 of Title 3 of the Penal Code, for use by those officers in the performance of their duties.

I'm sure many of the calls made on what appear to be personal cell phones would fall under personal calls. You see smiles on the faces of the officers. It's impossible to have a smile on your face when discussing work, that is unless your talking smack about your boss.

I agree. I see numerous Law enforcement officials, BP, Calexico's finest, Firefighters, and even CHP driving and chit chatting over their phone. It's obvious there using their cell for personnel use, smiling and laughing out loud while driving. As we all know, some of these individuals think they can walk on water. Exclamation

Yet, the always wonder why we are so quick to judge them and label them as A-holes.

Those who have even a little authority tend to abuse it, and cops have more authority than I'm comfortable with. If I was puting my life in danger every day, I would probably feel like I was entitled to make a little phone call every now and then to check on my wife and child. Which isn't to say I think it's OK. I see a cop parked in the middle of Meadows Dr talking to some chick hanging on the car window all the time. i don't care for it, but I see where they're coming from.

I hate using hands free devices. I dusted off the blue tooth I bought last year. I bought the most expensive one they had at the time thinking this guranteed it would work well. I returned it to the store about four times because it sucked ass. I have a different phone now and it works much better, but I still feel like a complete ass with that little penis hanging from my ear.
