Reports are coming out that the City of Calexico has approved a balanced budget, so the $2.7 million the city was in the red for is now gone. How did they do it? Well, apparently city employees will not get a raise for the next 6 months and can kiss getting free Social Security benefits good-bye.
The City of Calexico pays 100% of their employees Social Security?!

At first I thought that the Employee union would be all over the city, but then I said to myself. what's worse? Not getting a raise for six months, or not having a job in Six months???
It is just amazing that we have to face a defecit in order for the City to realize they are over spending everywhere. How long have they been running like this?? Doing this 3 years ago, would've saved 9 Million bucks.
Hindsight is awesome. |

Bigger question is why does the city manager and the council get a raise right before they cut back on their employees... heck at least at the state level, the governor gave 10 % cut across the board.
Selfish council bastards!!!! |

Is it common for government agencies to pay 100% of SS benefits?
According to Renison, Calexico is the only city in Imperial County that does this.
And how often do city employees get raises? Is it every six months? Why did they pick 6 months and not 1 year?
I wouldn't be surprised city employees get bonuses. |

One former reliable City of Calexico employee informed me a few years back there is/was a computer guy who works for time for the city, but never really came in to work. I don't recall if he was out on disability or sick leave for an extended period of time, but he was collecting a ~$60,000 annual salary because he had so much history with the city. |

There are many employees like that, but just because there are the few (compadres) in there does not mean that all city employees are like that.
Plus I can guarantee that the city manager and City Council get the same bonuses and those bonuses most likely will not be affected... |

What types of bonuses do city employees get?
I thought civil servants didn't get bonuses since they are paid with tax dollars. |
