Of good food and bad service?
Don't know if you noticed, but there's been a flurry of positive reviews from pro-Rosa Plane Food "customers" on the Calecia.com Food & Drink reviews. Many of them have brought up that Rosa's Plain Food (as officially listed in the phone book) is celebrating their 20 years of being in business. If this truly is the case, then that's pretty awesome that a restaurant with a combination good food and bad service could be around that long and and still be going strong with so many die-hard customers.
I've gone maybe a total of 10 times in my life and sure it's good, a little over-priced, but it's just one of those places that doesn't come to mind when I think of eating out. I'm not sure a 20 year celebration would take me away from my Jack in the Box Monster Tacos, but at least it's good to know that it'll be there for me if I do decide to go and decide to splurge past a value menu meal.
Rosa, the owner, was 1 of 50 restaurateurs asked a while back by the Mexican government to a attend a "real" Mexican cuisine seminar. I don't know how they went about with the selection process, but I don't believe Celia's or Johnny's Burritos was invited. Someone must of done some research or known someone inside. Anyway, it's good to know there's a place that takes pride in keeping it real. |

| I love Rosa's. The food is great. Isn't that why you eat at a restaurant? Service can be spotty at times, but for some reason service has been great lately. I took my boy RandR for lunch the other day, it was his first time there. Actually he took me. Other than a few expletives thrown his way im sure he would tell you that he loved the food. |

That was easily the best cooked steak ("carne asada") I've ever had. That isn't saying much because I rarely go out for steak, Pampas really being the only other place. What was remarkable to me was that the steak was cooked medium well, yet it was very tender and flavorful. I only finished about half the meat, but it was cooked so well that I even enjoyed a little bit of the fat around the edge of the steak ... I almost died. |

I believe I've been to Rosa's maybe twice. Both times I had the same thing (chipotle shrimp). Pretty good, but not memorable. As far as the service being bad, well, it wasn't horrible but I do remember my mouth burning due to the spicyness of the chipotle sauce and the waitress only came to refill my iced tea once.
20 years, wow. I've seen better restaurants eat shit and die in a matter of months. Tradition, I suppose. Fellow valleyites can be pretty old school, I guess. |

I actually wonder this all the time. The success some of the restaurants in the Valley have had completely mystifies me. Examples: Yum Yum (OK food, higher than average prices, terrible parking at the old place, terrible location), Fortune House (the worst service I have ever had -- anywhere, below average food, OK prices), Burgers and Beer (below average burgers, beer that is never as cold as it should be, higher prices), I could go on and on. |
