I read an article on how small cities should prepare for fewer commercial flights and it got me thinking…

What the hell is going to happen to the Imperial Airport if Skywest (from united) decides to close up shop???

I mean, gas is bad but it’s still a lot cheaper to pay $150 round trip from LA to Calexico in a car than to pay $180 for a one-way trip on the plane.

Is it a good time to keep dwelling on how Imperial County should make their airports bigger or make completely new airports? Would it be profitable for the county or airlines???

Check out the article below.

Even if SkyWest closed up shop in Imperial, another small commuter service would come in and replace it. There's some kind of FAA rule that says at least one service has to be in place at an airport the size of Imperial. At least that's my understanding.

Wouldn't IPL still be in biz because of FedEx Air and any other cargo companies that might use this airport for business?

San Diego ended up keeping the Imperial County pipe dream of an international airport, didn't they? Did they just expand SAN?

I guess no maglev transit to SD for us like the one Filner was hyping up.

IC's doing a regional cargo airport (supposedly) near Holtville. It's like a 10-year project.
As for maglev, I noticed those dicussions quieted down a lot not only after IC was rejected as a San Diego site but when the only operational maglev in the world (Tokyo) derailed hardcore. Besides that train would have cost $1 billion to make.

I thought that was Germany?

Germans don't know how anything about engineering, that's why...

You saying that "valleyites" aren't worthy of a $1B project?

First things first, the maglev train is totally not happening... there will be a measure on the November ballot about high speed trains, but their plans do not include the imperial valley, so you guys out of luck. Here’s the link:

Second, I haven’t heard beep about IC doing a new airport in Holtville, though you would think that they would love to take advantage of the old airstrip (which is in bad shape either way). The last thing i heard about expanding the regional airport was that they where looking into different sites.

As for the SD Airport, my guess is that they will end up making a brand new island, Ala Beijing, and built it there... Because god knows they wouldn’t built it in Imperial Valley if their lives depended on it!

I thought it was Tokyo where the train derailed. If not, my bad.

As for the Holtville thing. THe Imperial COunty supes were presented with some options last year for a site of a cargo airport. No final decision were made, from what I remember, but the Holtville site was the one they preferred. The site study was funded by some FAA grant the county got. It narrowed the sites down to around four or five.

It looks like Anaheim is going to have a direct connection with Las Vegas too.

All I'm asking for is a connection to San Diego. That would link us up with civilization.

Maybe some local businessperson can start the Imperial Valley Slow Speed Rail System (IVSSRS) and use the existing railroad tracks and steam trains for public transit. This system seems to work well with the 1970s bus transit we have in town.
