|

The Mexican consulate in Calexico has put together a program to counsel Mexican nationals (not Mexican-Americans) who have been unjustly fired by their employer for being a woman, pregnant, involved in a work-related injury or "moreno." Apparently there were 150 job discrimination cases in 2007 alone.
Despiden a mexicanos injustamente en Calexico

The La Cronica article does not go into details regarding the job discrimination that has occurred in the past, but is this only happening to real Mexicans in the workplace? Job discrimination happens in every city, but are Calexico employers truly targeting our border brothers, mothers and cuzzards? |

It's wierd for me. I've never fired anyone who didn't think it was unsjustified. I had a pretty heated argument this week with a tech I fired months ago for side-jobbing. He went on to fully work for himself, and even had a big customer in Calipat, leaving me high and dry just as my season started picking up. Things went south after a couple of months and he filed for unemployment. When I told him I wasn't going to do him any favors when it came to processing his claim, he blew up and had the gall to tell me, "That's [f-ed] up! I thought we was friends! [Eff] you, man!"
Obviously he was American, but my point is that no one ever seems to appreciate or even recognize why they are fired. If there are numerous claims there could be something going on, but I'd wait for some results before I got riled up.
Maybe the reason no has reponded is because no one has experienced this problem or noticed that it even exists. Again, I'm not saying that means there is no problem. |

It is dispiriting that raza are apathetic to this growing dilemma and that Calecianos think that they are somehow better than Mexicalenses. Outside this city and the Valley for this matter, raza has experience a new revival of socially acceptable institutional racism towards our people. I understand that money may bring a sense of entitlement, but it should never foster racism or discrimination of any kind.
150 reported cases in one year is astonishing to say the least. Hard working people should not be discriminated for any reason, and this City and its people should not look the other way on this matter. It would be great to expose the repeat offenders on this site. We should go to the Mexican Consulate and obtain the names of business who discriminate based on race, denial of workers compensation, pregnancy, and other activity.
Though, I fear that many of these cases are not discrimination cases as any California employer may fire their employees at any time because they are at-will employees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At-will_employment
Nevertheless, Calecianos should not let this activity continue because a new citizenship, green card, or money will never take away that we are all raza. |
