Soulman,

It's not about sounding like a typical politician, it's about common sense. You wouldn't move out of your house without knowing where your gonna go. The same can be said if someone is making you move out of your house, like what is proposed on this forum of moving the car lots elsewhere. If we were to force these car lots else where, we need a plan on where to move them, and how to pay for the cost of moving them. Then you need the support from the community to justify the cost and expense that the city is going to incur to make it worthwhile. I'm not trying to be rude either, but we are talking politic's and you don't want me to sound like a politician? The items that I noted in that statement show what would need to happen for something like that to happen. I said I'm in favor of restricting the amount of car lots, but to move them to another location, that is something on an entirely different level. Like "elchrist" said, we would need some good Public Relations to attract new business to these spaces on Imperial Ave. These new businesses would be a majority of new gas stations, and fast food joints, cause of the high cost associated with property on Imperial Ave. If the support is there, I'm all for it, but saying my hands are tied doesnt mean I wont do anything when presented with a well supported item.

A typical politician will SAY anything to get elected. He will often hedge on an issue as to not offend anyone. So on this issue you agreed, but you also said there was nothing you could do. Honestly I don't care about car lots being on IPL avenue. Everyone has a right to do business. They might be an eyesore, or too many of them but if they arent doing anything illegal they dont need to be moved. But youre right, it is politics.

Mr. Mayne,
How do you see this town realistically moving forward in the future?

Will we be the same Calexico as now or can I expect some better amenities for all of us? For example, WTF is up with the city park in the Victorias? It looks like we all got gipped regardless of living in that area or not. We continue to get screwed by the city in general when it comes to civic offerings such as the proposed community center at the armory building next to Heber Park, now proposed apartments. We're tired of being BS'ed about nice things to come and those ideas/promises never being fulfilled. Since you work with land, at least answer the Victoria park situation.

I agree that Calexico needs to greatly continue to depend on Mexicali's economy for growth, but let's not forget about the rest of the valley either. Calecia can be the envy of all "Valleyites" or whatever they like to call themselves. This town may suck, but it's also a good place to be.

Calecia is a beautiful thing.

elchrist,

The way I see calexico moving forward in a positive direction is something that is very important to every town/city in America. Strong Business. We have a large amount of consumer spending that passes through Calexico, to other destinations. Let that destination be The mall in El Centro, Viejas, and San Diego area malls. We need an attraction to keep those cosumers who are looking to spend money here in Calexico. We need to keep that dollar in Calexico, instead of Calexico being the bus station that takes you somewhere else. Las Palmas, Santo Tomas show a fraction of the traffic that comes across the border to buy consumer goods in Calexico. This proposed Casino could really help bolster Calexico's economy. With the recent press release stating that they plan to use the same sort of plan/layout as their Viejas location, this really exited me. Having an array of outlets along with the casino, the hotel, it all makes sense. The only real impact that would occur regardless of any development would be Traffic. We are already impact from traffic traveling to the mall and see no fair share of profits from the city of El centro. The county is negotiating the share of monies that the casino would provide to other cities/county. This was not done for the mall, whose facility is going to be similar in size to existing mall, and the commons. The Casino has a lot of potential, this is not the only plan we can rely on to boost economy in Calexico, we need to find some more businesses in Mexicali to take the leap and cross over to distribute the product and sell it here as well. Small business owners/entrepreneurs do need help from the city of Calexico. The city has to establish more ways to increase revenues, and im not talking about increasing taxes, other activities. Instead of the Wine Tasting events, have an expo for busniess owners of Mexicali to see what Calexico can offer.

Also on a side note, I have some yard signs now. Anyone interested in me put a sign on their yard, your support would be greatly appreciated.

I spoke with the city today regarding the park in the Victoria's. They explained to me that they were "caught up" moving the dirt from the homes away from the proposed park. They told me that it should be done by the End of the Year (2008).

This sounds like good news. Thanks for doing some research on this.

Did they say that the park was going to have all the same amenities as originally planned, such as tennis and basketball courts and whatever else I can't remember?

The only item that was mentioned specifically was the soccer field. If basketball courts and tennis courts were in the original plan, I dont see why they would be removed from the plan. It may have a taken longer than expected, but it will be done soon.

They should expedite the park project. With time passing by, material costs increase, and money depreciates. Don't be surprized if the park project is downsized.

It's already been downsized, because it was to include tennis courts for sure. A soccer field is just grass, with a couple goals. I would assume that tennis courts require special concrete pouring otherwise they'd end up like the ones at CHS. It's not as if they are going to maintain the grass so it looks decent either.

The city and/or Victoria Homes is gipping its customers big time. They need to include basketball or tennis courts.

The city doesn't even have a parks and recreation director. Even Holtville and Imperial have a full-time person.
