The city council awarded a $1.5 million contract to an Alpine company last week to restore the historical Carnegie Library on Heber Avenue.

Doblado Construction Inc. was the lowest of eight bidders, according to staff report. The majority of the funding, $712,000 is being provided by the California Cultural and Historical Endowment Grant. The remainder is coming out of impact development fees and city funds, said Sandra Tauler, Calexico’s community services director.

Is the plan for the old library still to become a public high-tech computer center?

Restoration projects are well just historical preservation efforts that often reflect majority sentiment, but at times are driven by a faction. I have no idea what the perception of Carnegie Calexico Library as I have not heard people speak of such library outside C.com. Absent a Mains field trip, I cannot recall entering this library. Thus, spending 1.5 simply to restore the aesthetics of the library will not benefit the community.

Calexico needs a public high-tech computer center.

It's supposed to be and I'm sure it will be, but I just haven't heard any news about it for the past couple years or so.

I know Mrs. D. is head of the committee. I was there for the public discussion thing at the Women's Improvement Center Building.

Calexico needs to offer free wi-fi.

I guesss this means the library will be restored for historical purposes and not renovated for modern use. Too bad. Hope that's not the case.

It will be restored and used as a public computer lab. That's is/was the plan.

I actually signed up to help with out, but I never heard back from anyone in the committee. I offered my uber-computer hacking skills for FREE.
