| Tacke will use the new technology soon when he begins teaching classes at San Pasqual and Holtville high schools. Both schools were unable to offer music appreciation classes because a teacher was not available, but now with video conferencing Tacke is able to teach the classes while sitting in his El Centro office. |
| In light of Gov. Gray Davis' proposed cuts of $5.4 billion to K-12 education... |
| The equipment cost the district about $200,000, said Phillips... |
| Each camera costs $400 and mobile ones are available for classrooms. |
It's good to know the school's priority's are straight.

It's good to see new technologies being implemented and actually used in schools, especially in the Imperial Valley. Even though I don't believe that this provides the same experience as being in a "real" class, it does allow students to engage in subjects not offered in their schools do to lack of resources (or teachers bitching about their pay).
I agree that the pricing is way high, but it's better than building a new gym for all the jocks.
BTW staff writer lady, it's not 'polycoms' stupid. Polycom is a brand name, so go Xerox your newspaper article and use it as Kleenex to wipe your ass. |

I'm not too sure about what if the cost for this is high or low, but i do agree, with Elchrist about the fact that they used the money for students not jocks.
Take De Anza for instance, does a Jr. high really need a fucking gym. They should have used that money to get rid of all those shitty trailers they have and built some classes. But you know how it is, GO BULLPUPS! |

Sports teams should be funded by the fans and merchandise sales. This would actually make high school teams play better. If you suck, then you have no fans and no funding and you deserve it. And what the fuck is the point of spending money on jr. high athletics? They don't lead to anything. You can join a high school team without having played in middle school. |

Great factual writing IVP. It cost the entire Imperial County Office of Education approximately $200,000 to implement the video conferencing infrastructure, not each individual school district. It still sounds expensive, but only time will time how valuable this investment was.
Thanks to this mistake, I can hear the bitching and complaining of many IV residents. Now they know who to shout at. |

It is better than bulding a new gym, and buying the teams new uniforms, but shouldn't this money of been used to better the learning experience in a tangible sense?
I remember when I took biology, the only thing we disected were some frogs that looked like they had been at the school for 20 years, in chemistry, we didn't touch chemicals once, and in physics, we did an experiment with eggs, and had to supply our own eggs.
School's in the Valley don't need video conferencing, I guarantee that most of the teachers here have probably never even heard of the technology, let alone know how to use it. The kids aren't gonna care either.
I see how this kind of technology can be very beneficial in a business sense, but not in a school. What do the students care what a classroom full of kids from Arkansas is doing? |

| I don't know how it is now, but when I was in high school every teacher I had needed someone else to turn on the VCR. THEY COULDN'T EVEN RUN A TV/VCR! How the hell are they going to run a video conferencing setup? |

I remember when I was in elementary school teachers always needed help running the film projector*. I could never figure out how these kids learned to stick a pencil in it to make it stop clacking!
*For those of you too young to know what a film projector is, it's those things that make it possible for you to watch a movie at the Calexico 10. |
