It's great news the City of Calexico is to finally have a new fire chief, but regardless of qualifications and personableness we must always remember these high ranking public servants are earning high paying salaries paid by our local taxes. This should remind all of us that if you see one of these highly paid individuals not looking out for the best interest of the city and its citizens, we need to bring the situation to everyone's attention.
Now I don't know what all local government employees are getting paid to serve us, but I do know that city manager Ralph Velez is earning ~$150,000 and new fire chief Pete Mercado will be earning $107,000. Public knowledge, obviously.
Justifiable or not, we need to keep our officials in check.
And that also goes for the rest of local government that doesn't earn a six figure income.
Mucho ojo! |

Anyone know how many fires are in Calexico per year? What is the response time? How many firefighters total?
Does the new Chief get a City truck? |

Are they originally from Calexico?
Now, I'm not sure what that'll prove.... |

| Very very qualified with a Masters and his father was a long time fireman. He should be the city manager. |

| why does this salary of the new chief have to be made public by the local media? i mean, why not just come out and say there is a new fire chief in town. it seems to me that people from calexico are more concerned about how much each city position pays and who's getting them. pinches mitoteros. |

Public servant salaries are made public because their salaries are paid by taxes. Tax payers have the right to know where their taxes are being used. |

When you know of a public servant in the community making six figures, you would hope that those with the median income in Calexico (which I'm guessing is less than $20K) will hold that individual more responsibly.
It's not about being mitotero, but more like becoming a vigilante. |

| i think there should be some type of privacy for the public servant. the local media like the newspaper shouldnt come out with headlines revealing salaries. The taxpayer vigilante has every right to know this but making headlines of the salary for our new fire chief in the local newspaper, c'mon. Headlines like this make it seem like if the public servant is only into this position for the money rather than the love for the job. But i guess money is the main importance. |

I don't think the newspaper put their salary in the headline. That was me. They did include the salary in the article, though.
I specifically did this to call out the attention, because unfortunately people do care when it comes to money. And when I see that it's part of my money that's making them earn that living, I sure as hell have a vested interested in how they are servicing the community. I would hope everyone else thinks the same. May have not been the best approach, but it's better than yelling out "FIRE!"
Now I'm sure these two individuals I've pointed out are deservedly earning their pay and feel good about a job well done at the end of the day, but when you do put a price tag on something it does raise more awareness. I'm sure both of them are doing it for the love, otherwise they would be in a higher paying city. Velez somewhat proved that by staying in Calexico. |
