I know some of you are probably going to call me a cheap-o, but I do occasionally use (online) coupons at stores, especially when it's one for $2.50 off my $3 soy milk or $2 off my Kashi snacks.
But recently I was at Wal-Mart here in Calexico and I tried using a coupon at a non-self checkout register and the Wal-Mart Associate said I couldn't use any coupons at Wal-Mart. I was surprised because a while back the self checkout register accepted them and there's even a special slot to insert them into once they've been scanned. I told the worker this, but they stated Wal-Mart doesn't accept them because the product manufacturer doesn't give them their money.
I know this was total BS, so I told them to give me back my coupon so I could use it the next time I did a self checkout.
I didn't take it up to management or anything, but I started wondering how many of their customers aren't saving any additional money because they are denied the use of coupons, regardless of being mailed to them or printed at home off a website.
So does anyone know if Wal-Mart really doesn't accept coupons or is it just that some of the workers might be too lazy to accept them since the W is always super busy? |

My domestic goddess says Walmitty does in fact accept coupons. But she said they seem to want to give people more shit about it at Wal-Mart then any other place.
From my experience, certain stores can rightfully deny the use of certain coupons for just the reason that associate told you: Non payment.
I used to get coupons in my Parliament Lights, and everytime I tried to use them, no matter the location, they were refused.
Back to your original thought about being seen as cheap? Bullshit. We use coupons all the time, from grocery stores, to department stores, to restaurants. When you've got a mortgage, a vehicle and a kid, and you're trying to live on the kind of wages one makes in the Valley, every little bit helps. |
