The other night I got dropped off next to Hotel Del Norte in Mexicali so I could cross the border walking and my friend (yes, I have one) could use his SENTRI pass. After I crossed, I waited for a couple minutes on the southwest corner of First Street and Rockwood Ave, also known as the corner of Selwick's.
As I waited, I started looking at the signage and noticed the claim that Selwick's was the world's largest perfume store. I can't remember the exact words on the neon sign about the front door, so I'm paraphrasing. I thought that was impressive, if it's the truth. I looked from the outside in and it does look pretty big. Bigger than any Sephora I've been too. I don't think I've been to any large perfume stores during my travels, so it made me wonder if Selwick's was in fact one of the largest, if not the largest in the country or world.
Can anyone confirm this?
Also, during my crossings, I've noticed Selwick's added a "famous" sign above their large neon department store sign high on the south wall. I chuckled when I first saw it, thinking back to when Molcajetes changed their name/sign to "Famous Molcas." I guess Molcas ain't famous no mo'. But anyway, if Selwick's is indeed the world's largest perfume store, then it would deserve to be referred to as famous. It's definitely famous here in Calexico and with Mexicali residents. |
