AT&T finally started offering naked DSL at the start of 2008 for them folk who don't got no phone line. AT&T isn't making it easy to find the order page on their website, but here's the direct link to their naked DSL plan page:

AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet - No Voice Line Plans
http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=10850

No phone line means approximately $30 less expenses on my utilities per month. The price of naked DSL seems to be about $5 more than with a phone line, but there's still a savings.

Now I wonder how I'll hook up my Dish Network DVR to dial out and avoid that $5 monthly fee.

It sounds like you and me signed up for the same bundle pack! The naked DSL sounds good. I'm glad I gave ATT my business.

Crap. I just realized there's one device in my hizouse that is dependent on a POTS line. I'd have to invest in some new expensive hardware to use wireless, so I'll need to hire an expensive consulting firm to do a cost/benefit analysis and an ROI study ala Calexico government to determine if going nekkid is worthwhile.

Vonage is about $25 for unlimited calls. Might as well keep my AT&T voice line at that price. Even the Vonage 500 minute plan is $15. Not really worth it IMO for the hassle of possibly having to switch to another VOIP service once VG gets delisted and goes out of biz later in the year.

Some home devices and services require a landline, like a home security system and a dial-up BBS.

What? You don't dial into the Calecia.com BBS? Psshh... you're missing out on some premium content.

I use my mobile phone for long distance. I can add on a Mexico long distance plan to my Sprint service for $4 a month and make calls for $0.09 a minute.
