This is a continuation of the original Shaving Tricks thread, but since the last post on that was in 2004 I figured I'd start a new one since there have been so many new technological advances in the shaving industry since then... Not.
Hardware
I'm currently using the Schick Quattro Titanium razor and blade for my shaving dissatisfaction. I found that this four blade razor works slightly better for me than the Gillete Fusion razor, probably because the fifth blade on the Fusion is overboard and having that extra gapping between blades ends up giving me a quicker shave without having to rinse it out as often when I haven't shaved for days.
Software
I was using Anthony's Logistics shaving oil and cream and even switched to Khiel's products for a little while which worked great, but I realized I was spending too much dough on shaving. I had received a sample for a King of Shaves gel from the UK and it turned out to work very well. I figured I'd never find this stuff on this side of the pond, so I kept on spending my money on Khiel's and finding ways to get scam free samples from their retail shop at Fashion Valley Mall each time I went to buy me a new Louis Vuitton handbag and Rock n' Republic jeans. Then one day I was at Walsmart looking to buy some replacement razor blades when to my surprise I saw a bottle of this King of Shaves just under $5. I bought the bloke and have been using it since.
Maintenance
I'm not going to touch on shaving technique since that's what the original thread mainly covered, so I'll write about a new maintenance technique that claims to save you lots of cash when it comes to buying replacement razor blades. I heard it on the Clark Howard show and Clark himself claims to be on the same blade for the past 9 months with the same performance from the blade since the day he bought it for 17 cents. It's real simple and I started using it this week on a set of Titanium blades for my Quattro razor.
Basically, you dry the blades after use. Rinse the razor blades in hot water for about 2 seconds, towel dry with the grain and preferably use a blow dryer afterwards for about 10 seconds till completely dry.
Sounds like a hassle to some, but if this can save me from spending $10 a month on razor blades, I'm all for it. If the blades were to at least last me 3 months each, then I'll only be spending $10 a year on new blades. Worth a try.
Seriously, I can't believe razor blades can be so damn expensive. And they've gotten even more expensive recently since they used to cost me about $8 for a 4 pack of these. For a while they were even out of stock each time I went to buy some, so I wonder if Wal-Mart raised the price due to supply and demand. |

Hey buddy, this sounds familiar. Kind of like I've said this to someone before. |

Damnit, I thought you were done posting on C.com for good and you'd never find out.
The razor spacing issue is obvious, stoops. Although with this logic, you'd think a 3-blade or even 1-blade razor would work best. Not true. |

Creepy.... You know what works best for me? It has nothing to do with the hardware; it's all about technique -- for me. I massage my face and neck (the areas I'm about to shave) with my finger tips after running my hands under very warm water. This seems to considerably soften the beard (or stubble), which is great since I end up not even needing shaving lotion most of the time. I go au natural, against the grain, resulting in a very close shave with zero irritaion (DISCLAIMER: RESULTS MAY VARY). |

| I also heard that if you dip your razor into alcohol every time you use it, it will keep the blades from rusting up... Has anyone else heard that??? |

Yes, I've heard this, but it's not the rust you should be worried about, especially since all these new fancy titanium blades won't rust. It's the build-up from the gel/lotion/cream/etc. you want to get rid of.
The alcohol for drying the blade works well because alcohol dries faster than water. |

best way I noticed is to shave with conventional blade and then couple minutes later finish off the rest with an electric razor. I mean like one of those self cleaning ones. Forgot what the brand is but that works for me............. |

when I used to shave ALL of my face, I would get irritation around my neck are...It really pissed me off that nothing was working...So I went with the grain when hitting that area and the mustache area because that would get red...I guess I just have sensitive skin when shaving...now I don't worry about shaving..It's good! I just shave around the upper cheek area so I could have that part straight...
Women worry about shaving their legs and have their issues with it and we struggle to find something that works for our face! |

Almost two months since I starting using the shaver cleaning/drying technique and it's still kicking ass. Just like new.
I would've been on my 2nd or 3rd blade by now and that's with trying to get the most out of them even if it meant cutting my face up.
How long can I go on one blade? |
