I love this guy.
Some day. Some day I will enter a coffee shop in the big city, order a chai tea and pick up a copy of some second rate or cliche philosophy or poetry book, sit down and allow myself to become enlightened.
So let me guess, you don't live in the Valley. I've got to give this guy some chile points for that.
I've always wondered why you only get this type of rhetoric from ex-Valleyites. Never from people that are really from places other than the Valley.
Umm, it's a big issue because this is the Valley. You know, where you would probably have a tougher time living your daily life if you didn't know Spanish. People can go live here their entire lives never knowing English and never blink. Don't speak Spanish, that's gonna be fun.
It's a geographical issue, you know, like the people that live near the border of Canada? Those people have to worry about not knowing Canadian.
So locoinclx, when you vacation in the Hamptons "rifas" SD? |

| I doubt if Locoinclx has traveled and seen the country. Walking around Los Angeles and New York-two largest cities- all you hear is Spanish in the street and good luck finding a English speaking service worker and in Canada you hear Spanish everywhere-full of Mexicans working in the service industry. Mexicans/Central Americans everywhere... |

Ohh sure! I became enlightened just by leaving the valley
All of this is a load of crap and you know it spic.
You’re right it is a geographical issue. If you live near the Quebec side of Canada, your bound to speak French aside from English, because that’s what they speak In the Quebec area of Canada. But by living right across the border in Vermont the hicks that live there will not speak French. Therefore in Vermont you will have those people that speak French, but I don’t see “derby line” pressing one for French and two for English when it comes to accessing services over the phone.
You see, I just do not understand why you guys are keen on taking snipids out of what I say and attack them… Bottom line is that I feel I should reinforce my stance on this issue.
First I believe that people who live in Calexico SHOULD learn some basic English. There are two reasons for that…
One is that by knowing English, they will not be taken advantage of from the city, the county and the School District. Why, because a lot can get lost in the translation. Therefore people who don’t know English will be bound to what people translate to them. Yeah you think that by being able to speak Spanish at the store and at city hall and in a newspaper is sufficient, but what about at city hall meetings, or being able to read your kids report cards. What happens when you fill out the deed to your house (if you have one), the realtor will most likely give you a contract in English and then what? Are you going to rely on the real estate guy/gal to ensure you that you’re not signing off on some bad deal?
The other reason, which is the one that bothers me the most is when people settle with speaking only Spanish because they truly believe that since they live in Calexico, they will never need English.
The result is the need not to vote, the need to be active in the community and the need not to become something more. You need to know basic English and some history to become a citizen and be able to vote. If you don’t vote, you’re letting all the other people in the community decide for you and the future of Calexico. Because of this Calexico continues and will continue to have corruption in all aspects of its municipal government, only because some people don’t care enough to learn some English.
Look I’m not telling all the non-English speakers to pack up and leave, because that’s not right. If they do not want to learn English that’s their own problem, but Calexico will not benefit as a whole if a big part of its population refuses to learn this country’s primary language.
By the way, what’s the deal with people always complaining about “ex-Valleyites”? Instead of discussing the true subject of this topic, you just make a general assumption about all of the people who left the valley. Like if we all thought the same way…
Maybe you should start looking at how many people who post here are NOT currently living in the valley. You can do this by looking just below their username and above your beloved “chiles” and whoala LOCATION!

Another one who can't read... Check location people, I LIVE in LA... And even though Hispanics are taking over the world, that doesn't mean that everywhere you go you'll find someone that speaks Spanish. By the way, I have traveled and I can tell you that most of the "Hispanics" that I encountered in Canada did know how to speak some French and English. |

| When I go to LA- I only hear Koreans, Vietnamese, Chinese other Asian languages and Spanish speakers/Spanglish and occasionally some bearded Jewish guys speaking Hebrew or Yiddish. I don't see any more white people in LA anywhere except for Laker games. |

Where is it that you actually visit?? I am not going to start naming places where there is a strong concentration of Latinos and Asians, etc. But you might want to go to a different area of LA before you start assuming that the only races in LA are Latinos and Asians.
I lived in Alhambra for more than 7 years and I can guarantee you that once in a while it bothered me that I couldn't read the Asian signs on the street. Maybe thats another reason why i support English as the primary language, to understand store signs on my own neighborhood. |

Monterey Park, Boyle Heights, Koreatown, Bell Gardens, Lynwood, Bell, Cudahy, Echo Park, Paramount City.
Now tell me how many white people live in those areas? They are usually old white people that you don't see working. |

yeah dude thats is less than a third of the size of la... And well i don't think i need to tell you why "white" people don't live in those areas, to tell you the truth, i know a lot of calecianos (not you specifically) who wouldn't like to live there either...
you may also ask yourself why there aren't many black people in those neighborhoods either....
by the way if you go a couple of blocks up and to the wests from echo park you will find Los Feliz and Silver Lake.... and I know that if you been in those areas you know that the white to Latino, to Asian, to African American is vastly different than echo park. |

I agree one hundred percent that people that live in Calexico should not only learn English, but become fluent in it.
Just like it is expected of you to know Spanish if you live in Mexicali, it should be expected of you to know English if you live in Calexico. However, the sad reality is that most people don't. Should this change? Yes. Do I support this change? Yes.
Now, I took the "You guys need to seriously move out of the valley" because that's a typical "I moved out of the Valley, so there" attitude that a lot of people take when they move out of the Valley and think that somehow, just because they have moved out of the Valley, they are a better person, when in reality, they're still the same schmuck, just in a different location. Now, I don't personally you locoinclx, but a lot of your comments sure seem to fit you into this type of category. I hope I'm wrong. |

It's not the whole, "I'm better than you" thing... its the "you guys have never left the valley, so you think the rest of the world is just like the valley" mentality that most people who have lived in the valley their whole lives have...
Look, I'm the type of guy who doesn't think that he’s above anything... I like to give my point of view as a former caleciano (though in my mind you’re a caleciano till the day you die). You see, I might not live in Calexico but I do tend to go back there constantly to visit family and friends.
Now the reason why these comments might fit into that whole "better than you" category is because people always put calecianos into two categories, the ones that stayed and the ones that left... Usually the ones that leave come back once in a while and start talking about how their life is a lot better and that Calexico is a dump and such... But that’s what they do... just talk...
I am not going to toot my horn and all that jazz about how I've been on this site for a while and given many opinions, you guys can decide that for yourself...
What I will say is that I spend a good amount of time on this website in order to help you guys, the caleciano's who stayed, in making Calexico a better place. I love Calexico! Therefore if my bitching and moaning about the state of Calexico help's people become aware and proactive in fixing the true problems that Calexico face, I will gladly wear the “that guy is an ass” badge or what ever other badge you guys wanna put on me…
If I didn’t care about Calexico, then why would I keep on writing on this post?? It just doesn’t make sense… |
