It's been a looong time since we touched the taboo topic of tipping, but now it's the Holiday/Christmas season and it's always nice to show your appreciation towards those individuals who make your life complete through the services they provide you with throughout the year.
It's time to tip!
So how much?
CNBC has a Holiday Tipping Guide to give you an idea of what is industry standard.
Holiday Tipping Guide

I personally have some concerns with some of the people who they list.
Trash collectors
My case is with trash pick-up. If the City of Calexico would have had their very own workers like they did so many years ago, I'd be very willing to generously do so for all the dirty work they do throughout the years. But not anymore, especially thanks to the one time the garbage truck driver told me to bounce after having a large cardboard box that didn't fit in the recycle bin and just drove off acting like a jerk. Your loss, buddy.
Lawn care
I do my own lawn, so I'll tip myself 100%.
Teachers
Teachers already get paid good bucks and get paid a long paid holiday breaks and paid 2+ month summer vacation, so do they really need a tip? OK, here's one: Say no to drugs.
Hair stylists/barber
The ramifications of not tipping your hair stylist could be costly in the long run. They make you look and feel good with your haircut, so if you give them a little more, you'll earn some serious points as I've learned.
Mail man/woman
I don't think I've ever seen my mailman, but I know they're doing their job. Even if I occasionally find my neighbors' and people from the other street's mail in my mailbox. It's too bad it's not like the good old days when you'd see them coming down the street and you'd wait for them to deliver your Thrasher Magazine subscription or my Club Homeboy merchandise. Nowadays we've got these "apartment complex" mega-mailboxes and it's just not the same thing. I do know a mail man and woman, so that makes me more willing to tip them, even though I have no clue what mine looks like.
Calecia.com webmaster
This dude seems to bend over backwards for everyone, so I'll be sending him a nice Amazon.com gift certificate. |

The CNBC article is wierd because it gets pretty liberal with the meaning of the act of tipping. It equates tipping with gift-giving which I think is totally different. If I ran up a $40 check at Denny's and gave my server a gift of $8 value, I don't think it would be very well recieved. Likewise, if I gave any of the teachers I have known in my life a 20-25 buck year-end tip, I'm sure they'd slap me right across the face with the money and tell me to get the hell out of their classroom.
In the end, I don't see why anyone should get a tip they wouldn't otherwise get during the rest of the year. |

I tip my hair stylist well year round too. I even change the perpetual scowl my face wears to a polite smile. This is important stuff. Once, I believe in response to one of these polite smiles, my stylist totally changed my look without me even asking her to. It was great she made me look energetic and younger -- not easy since the men in my family always look much older than we are. My dad's nickname in elementary school in Mexicali was "El Abuelo" ... what were we talking about? Sorry. I ramble. |
