What's the worst or best movie adaptation of a book? (does that make sense?)

apart from the Harry potter, lord of the rings. I'd say one of the best adaptations from a book to a movie has to be the Green Mile. Almost nothing is changed and every thing from the book is in the movie.

It has to be The Scarlet Letter with Demi Moore. I have never seen a classic raped so badly. I also didn't see how Oh Brother Where Art Thou was based on Homer’s The Odyssey.

It wasn't based on The Odyssey, it was inspired by it. For example, his name is Ulysses, the journey he undertakes, the sirens (the three girls in the river), the cyclopes (the bible salesman), etc. |

I believe the sheriff following George Clooney's character is supposed to be Poseidon. Poseidon was hounding Odysseus almost the whole time during his 20 year journey.

Duel is one of the few situations, I can think of, where the movie is actually better than the book (short story). And the short story was very good, too.

The Great Gatsby and Fahrenheit 451 were solid adaptations.
