I never knew this man existed, but considering Raul Rogelio Carrillo served on the Calexico City Council during 1950 and 1968 (golden era, maybe?), I would imagine he did good things for our town. Apparently he helped bring in the SDSU campus into Calexico, which in my opinion is pretty damn good especially if they named the quad after him.
He died after Thanksgiving day.
Can any old school Calecianos reflect on his contributions? |

| I remember he had a shoe store at the corner of Second Street and Heffernan. He was pretty cool. I always bought my shoes from him because of that. |

I don't remember this shoe store.
I used to buy my shoes at Ismael's and Tienda Del Army. |

That's quite an accomplishment.
I wonder what the white to brown ratio in Calexico was back then? |

Mr. Carrillo was a real gentleman. It was my pleasure to have known him personally for many years. He was pleasant and congenial. Unfortunately he was ill for several years before his demise.
I personally shall miss him very much and I know Calexico will. He was a very important part of the history of Calexico, involved in politics, education and civic improvement. He was never too busy to stop and chat and discuss ideas. He and his brother operated Rollie's Shoe store for many years on the corner of Heber and Second St. many years ago.
RIP! |
