This thread was not created to accuse Louis Fuentes of any illegal activity, but only to obtain information on the city contract awarded to Becerril Air. When a city contract is awarded to the business of a sitting councilman who was once the president, had principal interest, or may still hold such titles it would lead some to make unfounded accusations of corruption. This town is famous for believing that anyone with power is corrupt. Allegations are tossed around like empty ‘hielitos’ bags on a hot summer’s day. Thus, this is a great opportunity for the city to justify the award, for the local newspaper to get involved, and/or for the D.A. to conduct an investigation.
The city may or may not have a responsibility to come out and explain every award they hand out, but in this situation it may be wise for them to do so. First, it will nullify that believe in the community that our councilmen and councilwoman are corrupt politicians. Second, it will justify their 10% salary increase because they are looking out for the best interest of our tax dollars and not their own pockets.
It appears anytime a worth noting scandal breaks out in city politics or other news, the San Francisco Chronicle is behind the story. They broke the BALCO story that has led further investigations and congressional hearings based on steroid allegations. Throughout the years they have exposed the wrong doings of S.F. city officials. Therefore, this is the time for the IVPress to be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to making news. If there is something to report they can raise their journalistic integrity, and if not, they can wait to report the local holiday parades stories that will be printed.
San Diego has been in turmoil for several years now because the District Attorney’s office has been diligent in checking its city politics. I cannot recall our local D.A. office being as diligent or even as interested.
Thus, if anyone has information regarding the ins and out of this story they should inform the D.A.’s office, the IVPress, raise it at local meetings, or post it here on C.com. |

verbal, I can't thank you enough for taking the time to post this comment. As a local small business owner I am, to say the least, uncomfortable with Becerril's dealings with the City of Calexico. I found it deeply frustrating that for all the Law and Order I watch I had no clue as to what to do about this possible problem.
As you said, Becerril and Calexico could be totally clean, but I think public servants have the responsibility to take a closer look anytime this type of situation occurs. I'll be calling the DA's office Tuesday morning. |

| I've no way of knowing if he would launch a journalistic investigation, but I do know for a fact that the editor of the IV Press, Brad Jennings, actually takes the time to read the e-mails he recieves. Contacting him would not be a waste of time if someone had something worthwhile to say. |

| I too thank Verbal, for the refreshing topic of trying to find out the truth. This has gone too far and it's unfair for the city to be judged by the action of the members of the council. If one fails to take action and not help solve issues like these, then we can all blame ourselves and be painted with the same brush. I agree that something should be done. There are also other issues at hand, like councilman Ouzan using his henchmen to threaten other councilman running for re-election of going against them, if they don't support his choice of police chief ( Tabarez). I guess it only takes a breakfast at carrows to pocket his votes, wonder what a develop goes for, now that he works in real estate. |

| I've also dealt with Ouzan in the business world. He owns the taco place that is caddy corner to the post office in Clx. He tried to worm out of paying the invoice for my services so I called him out in front of his staff and customers. He quickly changed his tone and agreed to pay part of the invoice at that time and the rest the following week. It's been a year and that bastard still owes me 120 bucks. My point is, these guys don't get into politics and become snakes. They get into politics because they are snakes. |

| Nice comments about Ouzan and Fuentes. City Hall certainly can attract shady characters. |

The one thing that Calexico is still struggling with is the fact that people are still in the honor system.
I suggest that if you have invoices and other paperwork to support your claim that the guy still owes you.... I would send him to collections and let them deal with it.
This is the reason why these kinds of people tend to get away with everything. Its the whole mentality that since they are already corrupt and that the city is also corrupt, these people will always get away with it.
Once Calexicans figure out that their politicians are not omniscient and far from the pedestal, more and more Calexicans will end up paying closer attention to local politics. Once that mentality changes, local politicians will have far less chances of becoming corrupt. |

| Thanks for the tip locoinclx, but my little company does it collections in house. When I used to send past due invoices to a collection agency, if (and that is a freaking huge if) they collected the amount due they would take 33% of that amount. Unfortunately, these agencies have such little success collecting from commercial customers that they are not at all worth the cost. So now we cut out the middle man, and simply use the same tactics and penalties. |
