OK, I don't know how much city council members in Calexico get paid for their duties, so before I call this a ridiculous vote on their end, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they deserved a 10% pay raise... NOT!
Just a day after the 0.25% tax increase was voted down by the citizens, they give themselves a 10% raise. Sounds like five people just bitch slapped us all across the face. Maybe this pay increase for city council should have been put on the ballot last Tuesday. I guarantee voter turn-out would have set a record.
Renison and Durazo voted against it. Shame on Fuentes, Ouzan and Pacheco for going for it. Screw it, shame on all of them! |

And nobody will give a &*^%. Of course, the cops arent getting their raise, and this is already starting a problem. I think they were going to let the measure y cover th negotiated raises, and now they are scrambling. So we will take it in the shorts and they get a 10 percent raise. ypical calexico politics, as clean as the river.

| So much for these three people carrying for the City and being about "service" to the people of Calecia, they are in it just to like everyone else, to see how much they can get out of the city into their own pockets. Truly a sad day, but the good thing is that the additional tax prop. failed because if not, it might have been 50% of an increase...... |

See, I don't understand why these individuals who grant themselves a raise. I know of four of five who are already employed elsewhere with good jobs.
Durazo is a tenured English teacher at CHS.
Renison runs a cell phone business, AFAIK.
Ouzan is the 99 cent king.
Fuentes works for Becerril.
Pacheco... I don't know what he does.
It's not like they need the extra money, do they?
Let's say all they received was $500 stipend per month. 10% of that would be $50. Not a lot of money, but to me it's more of a symbolic "toma puto" to the people of Calexico. |

Alright, alright. Here are some deets from the paper regarding the salary increase:
City council members will get paid $605 a month right after the 2008 elections. So our local incumbents will still be getting paid $550 per month until then. That's a $55 increase for the basic math challenged. |

Pacheco actually also works for the School District, he does something at the District Office. He use to be the Principal at Jefferson, but then was transfered to the DO, which I am sure included a raise there somewhere.
I would say that while they don't get that much money and will only be $55 more, they should be an example nonetheless. But then again, this is politics in Calexico...... |

Oh, snap! He used to referee the wrestling matches on the Jefferson fields. I can't believe he was allowed to do that.
WWF-style wrestling is kinda dangerous especially when your an outsider coming in from a rival school and everyone there wants a piece of you. I was give back breakers, pile drivers, body slams, clothe lines and who knows what else while I was trying to reach out for a tag.
I don't think we ever won a match because the ref was biased. We clearly had more skill than the Tigers or whatever their mascot was.

I agree. It's not a lot of money, but it's kind of an insult.
The majority of people vote against having to pay more money with their shopping via a sales tax increase, albeit the tax money would supposedly have gone to pay for needed city services, but what they see is more of the city council taking their money anyway by giving themselves a raise.
Doesn't help either that water and sewer fees are more than our gas and electricity prices during this season. |

The problem with the 10% raise is not the raise itself, but the perception of the job quality of these councilmen and councilwoman. It is normally accepted that people who work hard and produce a good product deserve a raise. However, people around town and from the reaction on this board are that these councilmen and councilwoman do not deserve this 10% raise.
What strike me is not that they gave themselves a 10% raise, but that at least 3 councilmen actually believed they deserved one. |
