Nice comment AikiMike. Would be absollutely applicable is Calexico was in a "Perfect World." Unfortunately, actions revealed by the members of the Calexico Council have proven that we are not in this "perfect world." The winning canddate removed his application from consideration and in an act of showing true friendship and favoritism, it was replaced with the insistance of Mayor John Renison. You commented on his relationship with the city manager, I put to you, he has a much better relationship with the city Mayor.

In the public sphere, favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism undermine the common good. When someone is granted a position because of connections rather than because he or she has the best credentials and experience, the service that person renders to the public may be inferior.

Also, because favoritism is often covert (with exception to this case), this practice undercuts the transparency that should be part of governmental hiring and contracting processes.

After giving this some thought, in the long run, it may have been better to go with the hiring firm.

I don't disagree with the thought that hiring an outside headhunting firm would have been better and certainly more transparent. Unfortunately that didn't happen and for better or worse, Jim Neujahr is now the Chief. I certainly hope that it will be for the better! I really don't know the guy personally and haven't worked with him. I've been told that he detests me (one of many, I'm sure), but he is now in a position to demonstrate real leadership and management and I sincerely hope that he does. The officers and staff of CPD need just exactly that. There surely will be some changes at the PD, his role won't be developed fully for at least a year. I hope that we will be singing his virtues a year from now. Let's give him a chance to become his own man and step out of the shadows of his previous boss.

Some info about the new chief:

"Neuhjar takes over for Mario Sanchez, who retired after more than 20 years with the Calexico Department. Neuhjar’s contract is reportedly in place. He will reportedly be paid an annual salary of $102,000, with benefits. The position will be evaluated after one year to determine if a pay increase would be in order. Neuhjar will also be assigned a city vehicle. Termination of the contract will be at the discretion of the City Manager, with a 3-month salary and health benefit severance."
