|
|
November 6. Election time.
Calexico will be asking us to vote for a 0.25% sales tax increase that will assist in funding local services such as police, fire, library, recreation and a few other public works projects. The measure also claims to assist in covering up the New River, revitalize the downtown area, as well as promote economic development.
If passed, our sales tax will increase from 7.75% to 8.0% for 15 years.
Measure Y will be annually audited by an independent Citizen's Oversight Committee.
Yay or Nay? |

| Any reason why we should NOT vote for Measure Y tomorrow? |

| I thought we were already at 8.25%. I love the people of Calexico. I like it so much here that when I first got married I lived in EC for three months. We moved back. It was too wierd. But I hate, hate, hate, Calexico government's thinly veiled corruption. |

We've been back to 7.75% for a couple years now.
The measure didn't seem to pass yesterday. I wonder if people thought it was still at 8.25% and this would make it increase to 8.50%.

I've yet to hear any REAL corruption accusations against the current or past city council of Calexico.
Does anyone have any proof or is it all talk? |

I haven't had the chance to look up any articles that have reported the corruption, but I don't think it can be denied that politics in Calecia have a well deserved poor reputation. A recent example: "Louis" (not Luis) Fuentes was elected to the CityCouncil a couple of years ago. Now, remarkably, his AC company (Becerril) wins the bids for ALL the Calexico Housing Projects as well as the city's other construction projects. Starbucks, a company that doesn't seem like it would put its projects out to bid to local contractors, is having the HVAC systems for its new store by Wal Mart in Clx installed by Becerril. You think maybe that would have greased the wheels at City Hall a bit?
I wish I knew of a watchdog agency i could report this kind of crap to. |

Aren't there any (independent) investigative reporters in the valley that look into this?
I wish C.com could crack down on this type of B.S. If we could get some good insider info, I'm sure we'd all make certain this type of business would come to an end or at least make it more difficult for it to occur. |

Well, the way I see it, a month ago I could have screamed this out in the middle of Las Palmas on Wednesday and it wouldn't have made a difference. Now I know there is a public forum, frequented by people from all walks of life -- including police officers, where I can voice my frustrations. That's got to count for something. |
