Who should be accountable for hiring Mr. Guzman for both coaching positions? Is the Principal or the Athletic Director going to take responsibility? |

Ha, that's a good one. When I was there a number of atheletic kids stayed away from school sports, but I'm not sure why. I get the feeling that if year in and year out Calexico does poorly in sports in spite of the fact that it has an undivided student body (only HS in town) and has a decent sized pool of talent, then the problem must be institutional, right?
Brawley Union High School is similar to CHS in that Brawely is only slightly smaller than Calexico and it is also the only High School in town, yet Brawley always has strong teams in several sports. The difference? The community in Brawley expects results from the AD, and the AD accordingly seeks out skilled and passionate people to coach the kids. In Calexico no one seems to care very much. |

You Nailed the problem... Its a "community" issue...
Calexico, does not expect anything from its kids... Yes the usual teachers helping kids and coaches trying to salvage of that little legacy that CHS sports have, but at the end of the day, no one goes to support them @ their games or in their little fundraising drives that they have...
Let me know if these practices are still standing or if they have changed, because it sounds like they still are..... |

Well, to be honest I sugar coated things in saying the community expects nothing from the AD, when the blunt truth is that the community expects little from it's youth. I remember my senior year in high school the IV Press had an article on how Asian families in the Valley are very demanding when it comes to their kids' academic achievments. This sparked a surprisingly lengthy discussion in one class. I remember this because it wasn't until then that I realized Asian kids are not necessarily smarter than the Mexican kids at CHS. The Asian community expects their youth to do well, and the Mexican community, frankly, does not. This mentality, this predisposition to
mediocrity, of course extends into the prep sports. |

I second that... I was surrounded by Asian friends in high school... |

Proof--Guzman can't chew gum and walk at the same time, much less think. I gotta go bail hay, later. |
Well, the other day I got this VERY interesting e-mail letter via CC to the district superintendent regarding Coach Guzman's treatment of his student players.
If there's any truth to these claims, I really hope administration cans his sorry ass. |

I only went to one high school in my career as a student, so I can only speak about Calexico.
I only played one sport for the school. I thought the guy did a great job. Didn't put us down, was always extremely supportive, and you could tell the guy sincerely did everything he could for us.
If what people are saying about this Guzman guy is true, I hope it doesn't taint all of Calexico's coaches. I know some guys who have little brothers and sisters that play sports, and from listening to them talk about their coaches, some of them are really doing some great things.
I'm sure this guy is just a bad apple. However, being that it came out of Calexico, I'm sure people will find a way to taint everyone.
Let's hope Calexico doesn't have to suffer for this guy's mistakes. On a side note, is this guy even from Calexico? |

Thanks for bringing some balance to this discussion. The coaches I had were all nice people, to be sure. I just think they the AD's in Calexico too often hire their friends to coach teams. But I realize that's neither here or there. Prep sports exist to teach kids discipline, accountability, and teamwork, among other life lessons. If a coach is demeaning and demoralizing the kids, then he or she just needs to get the hell out of town. |

Community involvement contributes to the overall issue, but it is not the main problem. I would not blame the community when a school district hires a child molester simply for not expecting anything from their kids.
It is a top-down structure and those in the top who reap the benefits of such positions should also be burdened when something goes wrong. A principal or athletic director needs to do an extensive background check and in-season monitoring of its coaches.
Mr. Guzman alienated parents and the community from his first day as baseball coach. Instead of fostering a relationship with the community he approached the situation as his way or the highway. |

A high school coach should refrain from demeaning or demoralizing his kids regardless of wins or losses.
I am confident that the community can disassociate this bad apple from other coaches currently coaching in Calexico. I feel for Coach Ramsey as she is a solid coach who teaches morals and values to her players. |
