The U.S. State Department is recommending you apply for or renew your U.S. Passport A.S.A.P. before demand increases (even more) after January 31, 2008 when you'll be required to pull-out your own passport or a driver's license + birth certificate while crossing back from Mexico via land.
Sometime in Summer 2008 you'll only be able to use a U.S. passport or other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document. "Sometime" must mean when ever they get their shit together.
Apparently, right now is the slow season for renewals.
