| I can't believe that Western Auto is closing, it was a landmark in Downtown Calexico. Calexico is just not the same anymore, but my question is when will Sam Ellis close it's doors? Once that happens, then we will know that the end of Calexico is near.... |

| I read the IV Press article. Don't worry our trusted city council has all the solutions. |

Sucks to hear them closing even though I hadn't stepped inside in about 20 years. I know my parents bought a few things from them. Wasn't lay-away their big selling point?
I'm glad to hear that someone is writing a Calexico history book though. I wonder up to what decade it will include. I hope at least the 1980s as that's when I feel Calexico really started to change. |

Realistically, what are the alternatives for downtown Calexico?
Is another national/regional company going to move in? No.
The only real alternative is for a local business owner to open up yet another location or for another from the L.A. area to cash in with inexpensive merch.
What's rent like in downtown? |

Man, that's a historic site here in Calexico...I know that sounds dumb...but how could second street not have a Western Auto...everybody I know just calls it La Western...that's pretty sad it's closing down..I'll miss it. yeah, they WERE known for they're lay-away system...
As long as they don't close down El Jardin, I'll be fine! |

Nostalgia is overrated. Living in the past is for 10 year reunions.
A few years back I stepped into Western Auto only to realize that every item was marked up at least 25%. The identical Sony boombox sold for $80 dollars at both Costco and Wal-mart was sold for $124 at Western Auto (I know that's more than a 25% mark up). |

I went there today (10-17) and it was pretty sad; some of the aisles are beginning to be depleted and there were more workers than customers.
However, it was their fault in many ways; most items were in the last years unreasonably expensive although it was fairly well supplied store. People would get in and walk around for a while then walk away without buying anything and that's undestandable, but I rather see that nice historical building closed than having another 99cent store. |
